Position Summary
CAC Metal Recycling is seeking an experienced and motivated Lead Hand to support the daily coordination of yard operations and provide leadership to equipment operators and labour crews. The successful candidate will combine advanced heavy equipment operating skills with strong leadership abilities to ensure safe, efficient, and productive processing of scrap metal materials.
Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, the Lead Hand serves as the primary link between management and frontline employees, helping coordinate daily operations, support production goals, and maintain a safe and productive work environment.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
- Report directly to the Operations Manager on daily production, equipment performance, and operational issues.
- Coordinate and prioritize daily activities of operators and yard personnel.
- Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to employees.
- Assist with onboarding and development of new team members.
- Support the Operations Manager in improving productivity, workflow efficiency, and operational performance.
- Act as the on-site lead in the absence of the Operations Manager.
Equipment Operation & Material Processing
- Operate material handlers equipped with grapple, magnet, shear, and other attachments.
- Process materials such as pipe, exchangers, modules, structural steel, farm equipment, and demolition scrap.
- Load and unload trailers, demo boxes, and other transportation equipment safely and efficiently.
- Assist with material sorting, inventory control, and yard organization.
- Ensure production targets and quality standards are met.
Safety & Equipment Care
- Promote and follow all company safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct equipment inspections and report hazards or equipment issues.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and safe work practices.
- Perform routine cleaning, fueling, lubrication, and minor equipment maintenance.
Yard Operations
- Maintain an organized and efficient yard layout.
- Assist with load verification, material identification, and shipping activities.
- Support accurate operational records and inventory tracking.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 5 years of heavy equipment operating experience, preferably in scrap metal recycling, demolition, construction, forestry, mining, or related industries.
- Previous Lead Hand, Crew Lead, or supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience operating grapple, magnet, and shear attachments.
- Experience with Sany, Komatsu, Hitachi, Liebherr, Sennebogen, JCB, Case, Acculoader, or similar equipment.
- Strong understanding of scrap processing operations and material handling.
- Knowledge of load securement, rigging, and equipment counterbalance principles.
- Ability to calculate weights, dimensions, and volumes.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Heavy Equipment Operator Certification or equivalent experience preferred.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License required.
