United Active Living- Corporate Why Join Us?
United Active Living Inc. is a leader in the development and implementation of programs and services that support residents to “Live Well in Our Community.” As an innovative company, United Active Living integrates new and creative ways to enrich life experiences, provide growth and inspiration, and promote independence for individuals in the community.
Controller– Full time
Reporting to the CFO, the Controller owns the day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting for the organization and its portfolio of communities. This is a hands-on leadership role accountable for the integrity of the general ledger, the timely and accurate consolidated multi-entity close, a strong internal control environment, and the development of the accounting team.
The Controller leads two connected streams of work: a corporate accounting stream (consolidation, external and management reporting, technical accounting, audit) and a property operations finance stream (community-level reporting packages, budgets, and partnering with Operations). The role is a key finance partner to operations, asset management, and senior leadership, and plays a central part as the organization scales and acquires.
Responsibilities (includes but not limited to):
Corporate accounting, consolidation & reporting
- Own the multi-entity close: Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close across all communities and corporate entities, delivering an accurate and timely consolidated set of financial statements under ASPE.
- General ledger integrity: Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, chart of accounts, and intercompany accounting across multiple property-level entities.
- Financial statements & disclosures: Prepare and review the financial statements and related note disclosures, and present results, variance analyses, and management reporting packages to senior leadership and ownership at both the consolidated and community level.
- Audit: Coordinate the year-end audit and review engagements, serving as the primary liaison to external auditors and tax advisors.
Property operations finance
- Community reporting packages: Oversee the production of accurate and reliable property-level financial reporting packages, and review them for accuracy before they reach Operations and Senior Management.
- Operations partnering: Act as a key finance partner to community Executive Directors and operations leaders, providing financial analysis and decision support on performance, occupancy, and cost.
- Operating metrics. Monitor key operating metrics across the portfolio — occupancy, NOI, labour cost, and per-resident-day (PRD) figures — and surface the business drivers behind variances.
Accounting operations
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, resident billing, payroll accounting, cash and debt management, and bank reconciliations across the portfolio.
- Ensure accurate revenue recognition for resident accommodation fees, home-care funding, care and ancillary services, and proper accounting for occupancy and rate changes.
- Manage fixed asset accounting, capital expenditures, and lease accounting for owned and managed communities.
Budgeting, forecasting, and lender reporting
- Budget process: Lead the annual budgeting process and periodic reforecasts in partnership with Operations and community leadership, including operating and capital budgets.
- Performance tracking: Track performance against budget at the community and consolidated level, and provide actionable insight to leadership.
- Covenants and lenders: Support cash flow forecasting, debt-facility administration, and lender/covenant reporting, including DSCR/FCCR and other financial covenant calculations.
Internal controls and compliance
- Design, implement, document, and maintain a robust internal control environment — including segregation of duties and approval workflows — appropriate to a multi-site operator.
- Ensure compliance with ASPE, corporate, GST and payroll tax filings and applicable regulatory and reporting obligations in the jurisdictions where the company operates.
- Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and process documentation that scale with the organization.
Leadership, systems, and growth
- Team leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop the corporate accounting team and the community/property accountants, setting clear standards and supporting professional growth.
- Systems & automation: Optimize the use of accounting/ERP systems, drive process improvement and automation, and build scalable financial infrastructure to support portfolio growth.
- Acquisitions: Support due diligence, purchase accounting, financial integration, and onboarding of acquired communities, transitioning their financial operations onto company systems and standards.
- Special projects: Partner with the CFO and CEO on financing initiatives, strategic analysis, and special projects as required.
