Instructor, Academic Upgrading
Salary: $34.83 to $53.50 per hour
Location: Slave Lake, High Prairie or Peace River
August 17, 2026 to June 30, 2027
Qualifications:
- Must have a Bachelor of Education
- Eligible to receive an Alberta Teaching Certificate
- Ability to teach up to Grade 12 (30-level) in:
- English Language Arts and Social Studies or
- Mathematics and Sciences (Alberta Education curriculum)
- A clean vulnerable sector criminal record check prior to commencement
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license
Assets:
- Experience working in cross-cultural environments
- Ability to speak Cree
- Experience with distance or distributed learning
- Experience teaching adult learners
Nature and Scope of Work:
Reporting to the Chair, Academic Upgrading, this position is responsible for planning, preparing, delivering, and evaluating instruction for adult learners at preparatory and high school levels. This position primarily delivers instruction through distance education platforms and requires strong technical, instructional, and interpersonal communication skills.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Student Engagement and Support
- Demonstrate respect for individual differences, including cultural diversity and special needs
- Promote student confidence, accountability, and pride in learning outcomes
- Use positive reinforcement and constructive feedback to support student progress
- Establish clear expectations for student behavior in an online environment
- Encourage self-reflection and continuous improvement in learners
- Maintain accessibility through scheduled class time and additional support (e.g., tutoring, extra help sessions)
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to help students overcome barriers
- Refer students to counselling or other support services as appropriate
- Assist students in accessing college services and resources
Instructional Delivery
- Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans using a variety of teaching strategies
- Adapt instruction to diverse learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic)
- Incorporate students’ prior experiences into learning activities
- Provide course outlines at the start of each class
- Use educational technology to enhance distance learning experiences
- Maintain an interactive and engaging virtual classroom environment
- Provide additional learning support outside scheduled class time as required
- Collaborate with peers to enhance instructional quality
- Adjust teaching methods based on student feedback and performance data
- Implement academic and behavioral intervention strategies when necessary
Assessment and Evaluation
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student progress
- Provide timely feedback on assignments and evaluations
- Prepare and distribute progress reports as required
- Participate in student case conferences and interventions where appropriate
Administrative Responsibilities
- Track and report student attendance
- Submit grades, course audit reports, and required documentation
- Complete monthly reports and summaries as needed
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and personal information
Professional Practice and College Alignment
- Adhere to college policies, procedures, and values
- Participate in the performance appraisal process and set professional development goals
- Engage in ongoing professional development
- Collaborate with colleagues and leadership to support student success
- Participate in meetings and contribute feedback

Skills/Knowledge:
