Program Overview
Calgary Respite House is a short stay home in the community for people experiencing suicidal crisis; it is an alternative to hospital. Calgary Respite House offers a 3–5-night stay with peer support, referrals to resources, and programming. Programming includes safety planning, recovery planning, and skills to help manage suicidality. Calgary Respite House is operated by Cympact: A Community Impact Foundation and supported by Canadian Mental Health Association, Alberta Division and Centre for Suicide Prevention.
Position Details
Calgary Respite House is open 24/7, 365 days/year, is double staffed and includes awake overnight shifts. Onsite only in NW Calgary.

Overnight Relief Staff - multiple positions
Position Overview
The Mental Health Support Specialist works directly with guests who are in suicidal crisis and are unable to return safely to their current living arrangements, but do not require support in an acute mental health care setting. The Mental Health Support Specialist works with the Manager and Peer Support Specialist to provide direct care and support to the guests during their short stay in the facility. The Mental Health Support Specialist will support with Crisis Intervention and De-escalation when needed.
Duties
- Help provide a safe, warm and welcoming environment for people experiencing suicidal crisis
- Support guests to create safety and recovery plans
- De-escalate situations with guests who are in suicidal crisis
- Connect guests to appropriate Respite and community supports, as needed
- Complete documentation, as required
- Comply with Occupational Health and Safety Standards
- Follow all Calgary Respite House policies and procedures
- Manage workload aligned with standard operating procedures and policies
- Minor housekeeping and meal preparation
- Other duties as required
Essential Experience and Training
Required:
- Bachelor of Social Work, Psychology, or other relevant Human Services disciplines, with at least 2 years of experience working with individuals in suicidal crisis; or
- A recognized Diploma in social work or other relevant Human Services disciplines, with at least 5 years of experience working with individuals experiencing suicidal crisis
- Valid Criminal Record check
- Current First Aid & CPR Certificate
An Asset:
- Lived experience of mental health challenges and/or suicide crisis
- Crisis intervention, de-escalation, and conflict resolution experience
- Current Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) certification
- Current Non-violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), De-Escalation, or similar recognized training
