Job Description
SUMMARY
The Fertility Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient-centered care throughout all stages of the fertility journey, including clinical cycle coordination, patient education, support during procedures, and recovery room care. The nurse manages a caseload of patients, ensures clear and accurate documentation, supports quality assurance processes, and provides compassionate emotional support. This role includes responsibilities in both fertility care and operating room/recovery care and may require travel between the Mississauga and Oakville clinic locations
FUNCTIONAL AREAS
1. Patient Interaction
- Counsels, educates, and coordinates patient care throughout all phases of fertility treatment including pre-screening, treatment, and post-treatment follow up
- Manages a caseload of patients and ensures physician orders are communicated and understood
- Reviews patient charts to confirm consents, bloodwork, and pre-procedure requirements are completed in advance
- Directs and monitors cycling visits, including medication teaching (schedule, dosage, administration)
- Communicates laboratory results with interpretation and guidance
- Coordinates scheduling of all fertility cycles and procedures with patients and appropriate departments (financial, lab, OR, etc)
- Provides education on fertility procedures including Egg Retrieval, Embryo Transfer, IUI, Sonohysterogram, and Endometrial Biopsy
- Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional and psychological support to patients and families
- Ensures quality care by adhering to therapeutic standards, clinic protocols, and regulatory guidelines
2. Clinical / Technical Duties
- Performs routine clinical assessments (height, weight, vital signs, phlebotomy, etc)
- Participates in medication administration and patient monitoring
- Assists physicians during clinic procedures, examinations, and operating room procedures in ACLS or scrub capacity
- Admits patients for OR procedures, completes verification processes, and provides post-anesthetic recovery care
- Monitors post-procedure recovery and escalates concerns to physicians as appropriate
- Maintains safe, clean, and compliant clinical and OR environments
- Ensures crash cart medications, OR supplies, linens, and clinical inventory are consistently maintained
- Follows infection control practices, medication storage requirements, and controlled substance regulations
- Ensures equipment is functioning properly and reports malfunctions promptly
- Documents all patient care in eIVF and clinical records
3. Team Communication & Coordination
- Ensures accurate and timely charting in eIVF and other documentation systems
- Participates in quality assurance initiatives including infection control and autoclaving of instruments
- Acts as a resource to team members and collaborates within a multidisciplinary environment
- Makes appropriate referrals to other team members when needed
- Covers weekends and holidays as assigned
- Attends meetings and communicates relevant clinical or operational issues appropriately
- Supports overall program goals through effective teamwork and independent work when required
4. Reliability
- Reporting to work on time, ready for scheduled duties, is an essential requirement of this role
- Travel between the Mississauga and Oakville clinic sites may be required based on operational needs
EXPERIENCE / POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience
- RN required
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience
- Current RN license in good standing
- Current BLS & ACLS certification
- Experience in women’s health and/or fertility preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Competent in accessing, inputting, and retrieving electronic medical information
- Knowledge of clinic processes, equipment, and general office procedures
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a patient caseload
- Ability to convey information clearly, accurately, and succinctly
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- Maintains professional knowledge through in-house and external education
- Follows all provincial regulations related to professional licensure
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL STATUS
- This role is designated as essential and requires availability during altered or emergency operational periods
HOURS OF WORK & WORKING CONDITIONS
- Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, bending, lifting up to 30 lbs, and performing clinical tasks
- Vision requirements include close and distance vision, color perception, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
