The Brain Injury Association of Peel and Halton (BIAPH) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the needs of families and survivors of brain injury in Peel and Halton Regions. BIAPH provides advocacy, information, and resources to survivors of Acquired Brain Injuries, their families, and support networks. We promote the prevention of brain injuries, enhance quality of care and life, and offer community education.
Role Description
This is a part-time, hybrid role based in Peel and Halton. The facilitator will organize and lead 2 support groups meetings per month for young adults with acquired brain injuries, ensuring meetings are welcoming, accessible, and trauma-informed. The role involves providing active listening, fostering peer connection, and guiding group discussions while maintaining clear boundaries and confidentiality. The facilitator will also collaborate with staff and community partners, identify and share relevant resources, and provide feedback to help improve BIAPH’s programs.
Responsibilities
Support Group Facilitation
- Facilitate in-person and online social meetings for a group of young adults living with the effects of an acquired brain injury. Along with additional facilitator(s), you will assist with the participation and inclusion of members within the group — providing a safe environment for members to connect with other survivors in a community setting.
- You will help group members engage in several types of activities such as baking/cooking, painting, and crafts. You will also assist with events such as going to the movies, out for dinner, or hosting a games night. The meetings will be primarily in-person (location will vary depending on planned activity) and occasional in-person meetings.
- You will be required to be available on Thursdays between 5:45 PM to 8:45 PM to provide facilitator coverage:
- A facilitator schedule is provided at least a month in advance.
- Back up opportunities may be available for Tuesday evening’s virtual Survivor & Caregiver Support Group.
- Meetings are held twice a month across Peel and Halton.
- Meeting notes are to be completed after each meeting
Support Group Planning
- Participate in planning meetings with the members and scheduled Facilitators.
- Review finalize plans for meeting activities and ensure any required planning or material preparation are completed by deadlines. This includes completing community research, making reservations/ booking tickets or venues, web links/games are prepared in advance.
- Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
Qualifications
- Experience working with those living with an Acquired Brain Injury – 3 years (Preferred).
- Rehabilitation Therapist, Rehabilitation Support Worker with a bachelor’s degree, Recreation Therapist, Kinesiologist, Social Service Worker, Social Worker preferred, other education backgrounds considered with experience.
- Knowledge of local resources for people living with the effects of an ABI.
- Must be comfortable with technology and familiar with the use of Google Workspace, Zoom and responsive to company emails.
- Must have strong judgment, critical thinking, interpersonal skills and be comfortable with effectively managing group dynamics.
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Must have strong communication (verbal and written), organizational, and follow-up skills.
- Ability to travel to attend support group meetings in Peel and Halton. A driver's License and a vehicle is an asset.
- Residence in the Peel-Halton region is preferred. There is no compensation for travel time.
- A current Criminal Record Check with the Vulnerable Sector will be required.
- Current CPR/First Aid Certified required.
- Emergency/Seizure response with Rescue Medication Administration is required.
- CPI or Safe Management Training is an asset.
- Bondable and Eligible to work in Canada required.
