ONSITE3D is a Calgary and Houston-based Virtual Design and Construction company and your integrated partner for project success. We work across the full project lifecycle: 3D laser scanning, point cloud processing, full-discipline engineering and design, shop fabrication, and field construction. We serve oil sands, refinery, midstream, mining, and petrochemical clients across Canada and the U.S. Gulf Coast. The scan informs the engineering, the engineering drives the fabrication drawings, and the field team arrives already knowing the asset.
POSITION SUMMARY
ONSITE3D is looking for a Lead As-Built Technician with deep experience in field construction and commissioning. You understand that what gets captured in the field is what ends up in the drawings, and that a poor field record has real consequences for engineering, operations, and future modifications.
The work spans active industrial facilities: SAGD plants, refineries, mine sites, and midstream installations. You will interface directly with operations, engineering, and field personnel, producing and overseeing the documentation that supports MOCs, CWPs, regulatory compliance, and brownfield engineering. You will also mentor junior drafters and help set the standard for as-built quality across the team.
The right candidate has a strong 2D drafting foundation, solid understanding of industrial process systems, and hands-on exposure to controls and electrical documentation. You are as comfortable walking a live facility with a set of redlines as you are back in the office working through a markup discrepancy with an engineer.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead field as-built capture activities, including physical verification of installed conditions against design intent
- Identify, document, and communicate deviations, revisions, and field changes clearly and accurately
- Produce and oversee high-quality as-built drawings and documentation, including:
◦ P&IDs and PFDs
◦ General Arrangements and plot plans
◦ Line lists, instrument indexes, equipment lists, and asset tags
◦ Assist with document control to standardize and track overall program status
◦ Termination schedules, loop drawings, and basic electrical as-builts
- Serve as the primary field-side point of contact for operations, engineering, and project management
- Apply process and industrial systems knowledge to troubleshoot field discrepancies and resolve documentation conflicts
- Support point cloud and laser scan teams by providing field context and ensuring scan data translates accurately into as-built records
- Coordinate between field construction activities and the back-office design team to ensure continuity and accuracy
- Mentor and quality-check the work of junior drafters and technicians on as-built standards and expectations
- Assist with inspections, audits, MOC-related documentation, and compliance records as required
- Travel to site as required; comfortable operating in active industrial facility environments across Alberta, BC, and the U.S.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 5 years of as-built, field drafting, or field verification experience in an industrial environment
- Strong 2D drafting foundation with proficiency in AutoCAD
- Extensive hands-on experience in construction and/or commissioning environments
- Solid understanding of process and industrial systems: reads P&IDs, PFDs, GAs, and engineering documents with confidence
- ANSI rating and piping specification experience
- Understands the direct relationship between field accuracy and back-office deliverable quality
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Navisworks, or equivalent software is an asset
- Strong attention to detail with a disciplined approach to self-checking
- Personable communicator, comfortable dealing with operations personnel and engineers in the field
- Valid passport is an asset
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada & Clean driving abstract
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience in SAGD, heavy oil, refinery, FPSO, or mine site environments
- Commissioning and turnover package preparation experience
- 3D modelling experience (AutoCAD Plant 3D, CADWorx) as a complement to strong 2D foundation
- Working knowledge of instrumentation and controls; exposure to electrical systems documentation
- Experience leading or mentoring a small field or drafting team
- Exposure to scan field operations, not just office-side point cloud processing
- Valid safety tickets required: H2S Alive, First Aid; Confined Space considered an asset

WHY ONSITE3D
At ONSITE3D, the as-built technician is where accuracy starts. Everything downstream depends on what gets captured in the field: the engineering, the fabrication drawings, the spool packages, the installation. If the dimensions are right, the project runs clean. If they're not, someone finds out at the worst possible time.
The work takes you into environments most people in this trade never see. Active SAGD plants during live operations. Major refinery turnarounds with tight windows and critical path scope. Mine sites with no existing documentation, where the scan is the only record of what's there. Industrial manufacturing facilities, water treatment infrastructure, and multi-phase asset integrity programs where the captured dataset drives engineering decisions for years.
Field work is done with FARO HD laser scanners and robotic total station equipment. Survey control is established and tied to plant monuments. Data is uploaded daily and registered overnight so coverage gaps get flagged before the crew demobilizes. The job isn't just scanning - it's making sure the dataset is complete, verified, and ready to be used the moment the team gets back to the office.
