The ByWard Market Night Ambassador Program is a pilot community safety and visitor outreach initiative driven by the City of Ottawa’s Nightlife Commissioner, executed by the ByWard Market District Authority (BMDA). The program, inspired by similar initiatives in Montreal and Vancouver, the Night Ambassador team will support a safe, inclusive, and welcoming evening environment for visitors, residents, and venue operators.
We’re hiring community-minded individuals to help create a safer, more supportive nightlife experience in the ByWard Market District. As a Night Ambassador, you’ll work weekend overnight shifts providing outreach and assistance to patrons, staff, and community members.
You’ll be part of a visible, on-the-ground team offering support such as:
- Helping intoxicated or vulnerable individuals
-Distributing water, snacks, and phone chargers
- Promoting consent and respectful nightlife
-Practicing bystander intervention and de-escalation
- Offering a calm, approachable presence in high-energy settings
Duties
- Patrol designated routes in pairs and/or staff a central kiosk to support visitors.
- De-escalate disruptive or unsafe situations using non-violent communication.
- Engage patrons in conversations regarding consent, bystander intervention and harm reduction.
- Offer supports, such as phone charging, navigation, and access to information.
- Work collaboratively with first responders and existing support staff (e.g. security, bylaw) to ensure a coordinated and positive visitor experience.
- Liaise with late-night venues to share program information and identify needs.
- Maintain logs and assist with program reporting and evaluation.
Requirements
- Valid First Aid & CPR certification (required).
- Experience in medical, social services, community outreach and/or harm reduction field is a must.
- Familiarity with the ByWard Market District.
- Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
- Well-versed in inclusive, trauma-informed violence prevention strategies.
- Ability to stay calm in high-pressure environments.
- Demonstrated resilience and ability to navigate unpredictable or high-stress situations.
Additional Info
- Necessary gear will be provided to execute the role.
- Training will be provided in July and will include sessions led by external partners and community safety experts (e.g. de-escalation, harm reduction, bystander intervention) and others.
