Underground Fiber Crew Lead – Cable Jetting & Pulling
Winnipeg-Based | Travel Required | Immediate Opportunity
ACME Technical Services is looking for an experienced Cable Jetting and Pulling Crew Lead who can work hands-on in the field while leading crews through safe, efficient and professional cable installations.
This is not an office-based supervisory position. The successful candidate will operate equipment, work alongside the crew and share responsibility for field execution with ACME’s Lead Technicians, Project Managers and operations team.
We are looking for someone who can step in quickly, take ownership of cable jetting and pulling activities and help build a capable, reliable crew around them.
Who We Are
ACME Technical Services is a Manitoba-based telecommunications contractor known for technical expertise, quality workmanship and strong client relationships.
Our culture is built around Excellence, Education and Humility. We take pride in doing excellent work, sharing knowledge and continually improving. We expect our leaders to support their crews, listen to the people around them and recognize that strong results come from working together—not from one person having every answer.
For us, valuing people means creating an environment where we empower and inspire each other to do excellent work. We provide clear expectations, the right tools and the support needed to succeed. We share knowledge, ask questions, listen to different perspectives and address challenges with humility. Good work is recognized, development is encouraged and every team member is expected to contribute to the success of the crew.
We believe strong relationships create better projects. That applies to our team, clients, partners and everyone involved in the work.
The Role
As the Underground Fiber Crew Lead, you will be directly involved in daily cable jetting, blowing and pulling activities while providing leadership and direction to the crew.
You will work closely with ACME’s Lead Technicians and Project Managers to review project requirements, organize equipment and personnel, solve field issues and ensure installations are completed safely and properly.
This is a shared leadership environment. You will not be expected to carry every responsibility alone, but you will be expected to take ownership of your work, communicate clearly and contribute to the success of the entire project team.
Responsibilities
- Work hands-on with crews completing underground cable jetting, blowing and pulling activities.
- Operate cable jetting machines, compressors, winches, capstans and related equipment.
- Lead daily field activities and organize crew members according to the installation plan.
- Share field leadership responsibilities with ACME Lead Technicians.
- Review drawings, routes, duct configurations, cable lengths and project requirements before work begins.
- Help plan equipment placement, reel setup, pulling direction, intermediate assist points and crew positioning.
- Confirm ducts have been properly rodded, proven, cleaned and prepared before installation.
- Monitor air pressure, jetting speed, pulling tension, cable condition and equipment performance.
- Identify blocked, damaged, poorly prepared or high-friction ducts.
- Troubleshoot field problems and develop practical solutions with the project team.
- Protect cable, ducts, structures, client property and equipment throughout the installation.
- Coordinate with Lead Technicians, Project Managers, civil crews, clients and other field personnel.
- Complete daily production records, safety documentation and equipment inspections.
- Train and mentor crew members in proper cable handling, equipment operation and installation practices.
- Help maintain equipment and identify required repairs, maintenance or replacement parts.
- Maintain a professional, organized and safe worksite.
- Represent ACME Technical Services positively with clients and project partners.
What We Are Looking For
The successful candidate will have:
- Extensive hands-on experience with underground cable jetting, cable blowing and cable pulling.
- Previous experience leading or directing cable installation crews.
- Strong knowledge of jetting equipment, compressors, reels, winches, capstans and cable-handling practices.
- The ability to plan and complete installations through long, difficult or high-friction duct routes.
- Experience troubleshooting blocked, damaged or poorly prepared ducts.
- A clear understanding of pulling tension, bend radius, cable limitations and proper cable protection.
- Strong field leadership and communication skills.
- The ability to work effectively with other Lead Technicians and project leaders.
- The ability to remain organized and make sound decisions as field conditions change.
- A commitment to safety, workmanship and professional client relationships.
- A valid driver’s licence.
- The ability and willingness to travel for project work.
Experience with fibre-optic cable installation, telecommunications construction, duct verification, civil coordination, fibre splicing or testing environments would be considered an asset.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation based on demonstrated experience.
- A hands-on leadership role with immediate responsibility.
- Opportunities to help develop ACME’s cable jetting and pulling capabilities.
- Support from experienced Lead Technicians, Project Managers and operations staff.
- Established technical, safety and administrative systems.
- Opportunities to work on projects throughout Manitoba and Western Canada.
- A team that values practical knowledge, initiative and continuous improvement.
- A workplace where experienced employees are encouraged to contribute ideas and improve how the work is completed.
- Opportunities to train, mentor and develop less-experienced technicians.
This Position May Be a Good Fit If You:
- Prefer working in the field rather than managing from a distance.
- Take pride in completing difficult installations properly.
- Can lead a crew while remaining an active part of the work.
- Work well with other experienced leaders and are comfortable sharing responsibility.
- Understand that production matters, but not at the expense of safety, quality or damaged infrastructure.
- Are comfortable taking ownership and making field decisions.
- Enjoy teaching and developing less-experienced crew members.
- Want to work for a company where your knowledge, experience and input will be valued.
Compensation
Compensation will be based on demonstrated cable-jetting, pulling and crew-leadership experience. Exceptional candidates with extensive technical and supervisory experience may be considered above the posted range.
