Overall Responsibility:
The Direct Support Professional supports individuals who have developmental disabilities, ensuring that their quality of life is maximized. Positions assist individuals to participate in educational, vocational, work, recreational and leisure activities. All work is guided by the Vulnerable Persons Act.
Residential Care:
- Support individual’s physical, emotional and mental health.
- Support and monitor basic health and medical care, including administering medications accurately.
- Respects individual’s privacy.
- Ensure that there is adequate supervision in identified risk areas and follow support plans.
- Recognize and respond to concerns of abuse and neglect.
Meals:
- Support the person with choosing nutritious meals and snacks in accordance with Canadas Food Guide and adapt to individuals likes, preferences, choices and medical requirements.

Person Centered Planning:
- Support individuals with their person centered planning process including providing support in preplanning and follow-through on the goals set by the person.
Encourage Involvement with Activities:
- Encourage and assist each individual to participate in the daily activities and responsibilities of their personal lives and their home.
- Supporting people to find and attend events of interest in and around the community.
Safety:
- Ensure that the property and equipment are maintained and utilized safely and ensure that safety guidelines are followed.
- Reports any need for repair to equipment or property to the service coordinator.
- Follow any personal safety plans in place.
Communication:
- Maintain positive and effective communications with individuals, families, supervisors, agencies, coworkers, and the community-at-large.
- Responsible for sharing pertinent information with other staff while maintaining confidentiality.
Prepare Documentation:
- Complete necessary records and documentation in accordance with agency policy and procedures, Residential Care Licensing, and CLdS requirements.
- Responsible for reading logbooks/ communication books before shift and completing logs during/ at the end of every shift.
Community Involvement:
- Play an active role in helping develop and maintain relationships with families and friends, neighbours and the community by creating opportunities, building individuals skills on how to maintain relationships, and teaching and assisting people to develop positive social interactions.
Personal Financial Management:
- Assist individuals with the day-to-day management of their personal funds as per their personal Financial Care Plan.
- Assist in managing household funds, including purchases and providing receipts as per procedure.
- Responsible for staying within budget for food and household purchases.
Professional Development:
- Participate in professional development including training, participating in meetings, and assisting with house specific orientation of new staff.
Support Guidelines
- Providing information and resources so people can make informed choices
- Respecting individual choices even when they are not the choice you would have made
- Working towards supporting people to develop independence
- Follow all support/behavioural/clinical/financial plans
- Working within the guiding principles of the Vulnerable Persons Act (VPA)
- Following policy and procedures set out by the agency to ensure compliance with CLdS guidelines
Qualifications:
- High school diploma/ GED required
- Experience providing direct care to persons with intellectual disabilities is preferred
- Valid drivers license
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
- Compassionate about the care and well-being of others
- Clear criminal record, child abuse and adult abuse registry and vulnerable sector checks
