Gloria’s Place is seeking Part-Time and Casual Recreational Support Workers to join our team in Winnipeg!
Gloria’s Place is a “home-away-from-home” for children and adults from Nunavut who are unable to live at home due to their medical needs. Gloria’s Place is a staffed residential setting that provides care and support on a 24/7 basis.
The Recreational Support Worker is responsible for planning, supporting, and participating in meaningful recreational, leisure, social, and community-based activities for the children and youth at Gloria’s Place. This role focuses on improving quality of life, encouraging social interaction, promoting independence where possible, and creating positive experiences in a safe and supportive environment.
In addition to recreational support, this role also involves providing direct care and personal support to children and youth. This may include assisting with hygiene, toileting, bathing, changing, oral care, grooming, dressing, meals, mobility, transfers, and other personal care needs as required. Personal care must be provided in a respectful, safe, and dignified manner while following each child’s care plan, routines, privacy needs, and level of independence.
The Recreational Support Worker must be able to support children and youth with various medical conditions, developmental needs, behavioural needs, mobility limitations, and communication differences. The role requires patience, creativity, flexibility, strong observation skills, and the ability to follow care plans and safety guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and support recreational, leisure, social, and community activities for children and youth.
- Encourage participation in meaningful activities based on each child’s interests, abilities, needs, and care plan.
- Support children during outings, appointments, community programs, walks, and special events.
- Assist with transportation and safe transfers as required.
- Provide supervision during activities to ensure safety at all times.
- Adapt activities for children with physical, developmental, medical, sensory, or behavioural needs.
- Promote positive social interaction, confidence, independence, and emotional well-being.
- Assist children and youth with personal care and hygiene as needed.
- Provide support with toileting, bathing, changing, oral care, grooming, dressing, handwashing, and other hygiene-related tasks.
- Assist with meals, feeding support, mobility, positioning, and transfers as required.
- Support hygiene and personal care needs before, during, and after recreational activities or community outings.
- Follow each child’s care plan, routines, behavioural support plan, and safety protocols.
- Monitor for changes in behaviour, mood, comfort, fatigue, medical status, skin integrity, or safety concerns.
- Report concerns promptly to the Nurse, Supervisor, or designated staff.
- Assist with preparation and clean-up before and after activities.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming home environment.
- Document activities, participation, observations, personal care support, and any concerns as required.
- Work respectfully and collaboratively with support workers, nurses, supervisors, families, schools, therapists, and other professionals.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and respect for children and families from Nunavut and diverse backgrounds.
- Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times.
Qualified Candidates Will Possess the Following Skills/Qualities:
- Satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check.
- Satisfactory Adult Abuse Registry Check.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
- Satisfactory Driver’s Abstract.
- Current CPR and First Aid Level 1 – Emergency.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, or willingness to obtain.
- Experience supporting children, youth, or individuals with special needs, medical needs, developmental disabilities, or behavioural needs.
- Experience providing personal care, hygiene support, feeding assistance, and mobility support is preferred.
- Experience planning or participating in recreational, leisure, youth, community, or activity-based programs is an asset.
- Ability to provide respectful, compassionate, and person-centred support.
- Demonstrated cultural knowledge, awareness, and sensitivity.
- Ability to engage children and youth in a positive, creative, and patient manner.
- Ability to adapt activities based on each child’s abilities, interests, and medical needs.
- Ability to work effectively with a variety of medical conditions, behaviours, and support needs.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to speak, read, and write in English.
- Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills related to safety, behaviour, personal care, and medical needs.
- Ability to follow care plans, routines, directions, and safety procedures.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to attend work regularly as scheduled or requested.
- Ability to work weekends is required.
- Class 5 Driver’s Licence is required.
- If using own vehicle for work purposes, appropriate insurance including adequate liability insurance is required.
- Health Care Aide certificate is an asset.
- Recreation, Child and Youth Care, Disability Support, Educational Assistant, or related education is an asset.
Preferred Experience:
- Supportive care: 1 year preferred.
- Experience working with children or youth with special needs, complex medical needs, or behavioural support needs preferred.
- Experience providing personal care, hygiene support, feeding assistance, and mobility support preferred.
- Experience with community outings, recreational programming, or activity planning is an asset.
