Role Summary
We are seeking a skilled and dependable Ferry Captain to lead daily vessel operations for the Sidney Spit Ferry service.
The captain is responsible for the safe navigation and operation of the vessel, the supervision of crew, and the overall onboard experience for passengers. This role combines technical marine expertise with leadership and customer service. You’ll work closely with deck crew and shore-based operations to ensure reliable daily service, safe loading and unloading, and an enjoyable passenger experience from departure to return.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working independently, leading a small crew, and spending their days on the water in one of British Columbia’s most remarkable coastal settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate and navigate the ferry vessel between Sidney and Sidney Spit according to all marine regulations, weather conditions, and company procedures
- Lead daily vessel operations including pre-departure inspections, startup procedures, docking, passenger embarkation and disembarkation
- Supervise and support deck crew while fostering a strong culture of teamwork, professionalism, and safety
- Monitor weather, tides, vessel systems, fuel levels, and operational conditions throughout each shift
- Complete vessel logs, safety documentation, incident reporting, and operational records accurately and consistently
- Respond effectively to emergencies or changing marine conditions while maintaining clear communication with crew and shore-based management
Must-Haves
- Valid Transport Canada 60 tonne Master Certificate or higher
- Marine Medical Certificate valid and current
- MED certification as required by Transport Canada
- Strong knowledge of safe vessel operation, navigation, docking procedures, and marine weather
- Experience operating commercial passenger vessels
- Leadership experience supervising crew or working in a captain role
- Excellent situational awareness, decision-making, and communication skills
- Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure
- Commitment to passenger safety and exceptional customer service
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on a flexible seasonal schedule including weekends and holidays
Nice-to-Haves
- Previous experience operating passenger ferries or tourism vessels in the Salish Sea or Gulf Islands
- Local knowledge of Sidney channel, surrounding waterways, tides, and weather patterns
- Marine First Aid certification
- Small vessel maintenance or mechanical troubleshooting experience
