About the role
We're looking for an experienced Accountant to own the full accounting cycle across our growing product business. This is a 6-month independent-contractor contract, with a strong possibility of transitioning into a permanent role for the right person. It's a fully remote engagement open to candidates across Canada.
This role supports multiple businesses within the organization, so you'll split your time across several sets of books and need to be comfortable context-switching while keeping each one accurate and on schedule. You'll run full-cycle accounting - AP, AR, the general ledger, reconciliations, and monthly close and reporting - with a significant focus on inventory and cost accounting, inter-company transactions, and cannabis excise. This is a roll-up-your-sleeves role, not a review-and-oversight one. You'll be in the books every day doing the hands-on work yourself - coding and entering transactions, processing AP and AR, and the data entry that comes with them - right through to month-end close and reporting. No task is too small or too "junior" here, and if you're looking to only supervise or delegate the transactional side, this won't be the right fit. Our environment runs on QuickBooks (Desktop and Online) and Google Sheets, so the role leans heavily on strong reconciliation discipline and advanced spreadsheet skills rather than a full ERP.
What you'll do
- Own full-cycle accounting across multiple businesses, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and reconciliations
- Do the hands-on, day-to-day work yourself: code and enter transactions, enter bills and invoices, and keep the books current and accurate (this role does the data entry, not just the review)
- Manage accounts payable: process vendor invoices, run payments, and maintain vendor accounts and accruals
- Own accounts receivable end-to-end: customer invoicing, monitoring the AR inbox, AR aging, and collections
- Perform monthly bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations, and resolve discrepancies
- Manage all journal entries for flower procurement and packaging procurement
- Own inventory accounting and valuation under ASPE, including raw materials (flower), packaging, work-in-progress, and finished goods
- Perform manufacturing and production reconciliations, including cost of goods sold (COGS), standard costs, and yield/usage variance analysis
- Reconcile procurement activity, including purchase orders, three-way matching, landed costs, and vendor accruals
- Record, manage, and reconcile inter-company transactions, including eliminations, across multiple entities and QuickBooks files
- Manage GST/HST, including all input tax credits (ITCs), and support cannabis excise duty accounting and remittances in compliance with CRA requirements
- Reconcile the general ledger to inventory records and Google Sheets schedules, and investigate and resolve variances
- Support cycle counts and periodic physical inventory counts, and reconcile results to the GL
- Manage and maintain the profit & loss (P&L) in QuickBooks, ensuring accuracy across the businesses
- Prepare monthly financial reporting and supporting schedules in accordance with ASPE
- Lead and support the month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals, and prepaids
- Support external audit and year-end working paper preparation
- Identify and implement improvements to accounting, inventory, costing, and reconciliation processes and controls
What you bring
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with end-to-end ownership of full-cycle accounting (AP, AR, GL, reconciliations, close, and reporting)
- Comfortable managing the books for multiple businesses in parallel
- Genuinely hands-on and low-ego - happy doing transactional data entry and bookkeeping as readily as senior-level reconciliation, analysis, and reporting
- Hands-on inventory and/or cost accounting experience in a manufacturing, CPG, or production environment
- Experience with inter-company transactions and reconciliations in a multi-entity structure
- Solid GST/HST and input tax credit (ITC) experience
- CPA designation strongly preferred (candidates without a CPA but with equivalent senior experience are encouraged to apply)
- Strong working knowledge of ASPE
- Proficiency with QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online, and advanced Google Sheets / Excel
- Comfort operating without a full ERP - strong manual reconciliation discipline and spreadsheet skills
- High attention to detail and strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a remote setting
- Able to invoice and operate as a self-employed or incorporated independent contractor
Nice to have
- Experience in the cannabis industry or another excise-regulated sector (e.g., alcohol, tobacco)
- Familiarity with cannabis excise duty, stamping, and CRA remittance requirements
- Experience consolidating or reconciling across multiple QuickBooks files
- Experience cleaning up or improving spreadsheet- or QuickBooks-based accounting processes
- Comfort using AI tools to work more efficiently - e.g., speeding up spreadsheet work, automating repetitive tasks, or streamlining reconciliations and reporting (a real asset in our manual, spreadsheet-heavy environment)
Engagement details
- Fully remote from anywhere in Canada. Candidate must have a Canadian working visa or citizenship.
- 6-month independent-contractor contract, with the possibility of transitioning to permanent employment
- $40-$50/hour (based on experience)
- Time split across multiple businesses within the organization
- The chance to make an immediate, visible impact in a fast-moving, regulated industry
