Overview
The Material Planner is responsible for planning, sourcing, procuring, and managing raw materials and packaging components required to support production at the Kew Drive facility. This role ensures material availability while optimizing inventory levels, controlling costs, and minimizing production disruptions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Procurement and Material Planning:
- Plan and procure raw materials, packaging materials, and components based on production schedules, forecasts, inventory levels, and supplier lead times.
- Create and manage purchase orders and follow up with suppliers to ensure timely delivery.
- Monitor material availability and proactively identify and communicate potential shortages or supply risks.
- Maintain appropriate inventory and safety stock levels while minimizing excess and obsolete inventory.
Sourcing, Cost Control, and COGS:
- Source materials and components from qualified suppliers while meeting quality, cost, and delivery requirements.
- Negotiate pricing, payment terms, minimum order quantities, and delivery timelines with suppliers.
- Monitor raw material and component costs and support COGS control initiatives.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities through supplier negotiations, alternate sourcing, and inventory optimization.
Inventory Management:
- Monitor inventory levels, material usage, shelf life, and expiry dates to prevent shortages, waste, and obsolete stock.
- Conduct regular inventory audits and cycle counts to maintain accurate inventory records.
- Investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies and maintain accurate data in ERP or inventory management systems.
Logistics and Supplier Coordination:
- Coordinate inbound shipments with suppliers and carriers to ensure timely delivery of materials
- Monitor shipment status and resolve delays, shortages, damages, and other logistical issues.
- Maintain effective supplier relationships and monitor supplier performance related to quality, delivery, pricing, and responsiveness.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with Production, Quality Assurance, Finance, and Logistics to align material availability with production requirements.
- Ensure materials are available and approved for production according to scheduled requirements.
- Communicate material availability, supply risks, cost changes, and procurement updates to management and relevant teams.
Reporting and Data Analysis:
- Maintain accurate records of purchases, purchase orders, shipments, inventory, supplier information, and material costs.
- Prepare regular reports on inventory status, material requirements, open purchase orders, shortages, and procurement activities.
- Use Microsoft Excel to analyze inventory, purchasing, material requirements, supplier performance, and cost data.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience in material planning, procurement, inventory management, or supply chain operations.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including data analysis, and reporting.
- Understanding of raw material and component costs and their impact on COGS.
- Excellent communication and time-management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
