Camp Leader- McKercher Summer Camp

We are seeking passionate, dynamic, and responsible Camp Leaders to join our McKercher Summer Camp Team. The Camp Leaders will play a key role in ensuring a fun, safe, and inclusive camp experience for all participants. They will work closely with fellow staff, campers, and community to facilitate activities, build relationships, and create an environment where everyone feels accepted. This is a great opportunity for you to not only bring your existing experience working with children but also develop new skills. The successful candidate will plan and lead as part of a team 10 weeks of camp for children ages five to 10 years of age. This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute and lead a variety of fun, engaging, age-appropriate camp activities, including arts & crafts, sports, outdoor exploration, group games, team-building exercises, and more. Assist with camp set-up, take-down, and other tasks as needed.
- Implementing field trips including mapping out directions and coordinating timing. Assist in completion of the daily programming page that outlines each day’s activities, ensuring we create memorable experiences for campers and families.
- Ensure campers safety at all times. Be aware of health and safety standards to support a safe camp environment, handle emergencies, and enforce safety guidelines. Maintain the cleanliness, order, and organization of camp spaces and materials.
- Support children with diverse needs and behaviors. Promote a sense of community and belonging by encouraging positive interactions among campers from diverse backgrounds, fostering teamwork, and developing group unity. Adapt activities and interactions to create an inclusive environment where all participants feel supported and valued.
- Help manage challenging conversations with staff and children. Communicate in an effective, professional and friendly manner with kids, parents, supervisors and co-workers
- Engage with community partners to support outings and connect families to community.
- Set a positive example for campers. Provide individual attention to campers, helping them navigate social dynamics, resolve conflicts, and ensure all campers feel included.
- Adapt to changing circumstances and environments in a camp setting, including changes of lesson plans to respond to unforeseen issues caused by weather conditions, camper needs, and unforeseen challenges.
Location: 6140 McKercher Ave, Burnaby
Hours: 35 hours/week, Mon.-Fri. rotating schedule between the hours of 8:15am-5:45pm
Wage: $22/hour

End Date: September 4, 2024

Qualifications/Skills:
· As this position is funded by the Summer Jobs Grant program, youth between the ages of 16 and 30 can apply.
· Minimum one year experience working with children, youth, or diverse or marginalized communities in a camp or recreational setting.
· Demonstrated leadership skills and strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and connect with individuals from different backgrounds.
· A passion for creating inclusive, supportive, and fun environments where people can thrive.
· Ability to adapt to different needs and learning styles and provide personalized attention when necessary.
· Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
· Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus.
· Knowledge of best practices in child safety, conflict resolution, and positive behavior reinforcement.
· School Age Educator and/or Responsible Adult Certificate. ECEA/ECEA also an asset
· Clear Criminal Record Check
· Valid First Aid/CPR Certificate
· Valid Food Safe level 1 Certificate
· Experience working in a team setting
· Be able to communicate in an effective, professional and friendly manner with kids, parents, supervisors and co-workers.
