PHARMACY TECHNICIAN - Casual

Hourly Rate of Pay: $35.58 -37.04 per hour
Pharmacy Dept. plays a critical role in ensuring safe drug distribution and optimum clinical care for our patients in compliance with the legal, regulatory and accreditation standards. As a part of pharmacy team and a key member of multidisciplinary team of nurses, prescribers and other stakeholders, this position is responsible for the provision of close loop medication management systems, drug procurement, and drug distribution within their scope of practice. Pharmacy operations require Pharmacy Technicians to safely operate variety of pharmacy automation systems for the provision of unit of use medications (i.e. prepackaging). Pharmacy technicians are expected to perform duties as assigned. Standard duties are subject to change within their scope as outlined by Ontario College of Pharmacists to meet operational needs.
This position reports to the Director of Pharmacy and Quality Improvement.
Our ideal candidate:
- Adapts to the hospital’s new Health information system, Computers/Information Technology and Pharmacy automation systems.
- Dispenses medications within their scope: unit dose drug distribution system, and automation and follows established procedures for effective and safe drug procurement and distribution, reports medications incidents.
- Performs pre-packaging (e.g. oral liquid unit dose syringes, tablets), as required.
- Dispenses/ distributes narcotic and controlled drugs per established procedures. Actively participates in inventory reconciliation activities.
- When trained and operationally needed, able to compound extemporaneous products.
- Maintains pharmacy inventory by checking medication stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed medications and supplies, placing and expediting orders, verifying receipt, removing outdated drugs all to ensure continuity of production or dispensing operations.
- Will perform final inspection of compliance packaging to ensure accuracy.
- Checks medication strips against Medication profile and other documentation for accuracy.
- Will sign technical aspects of prescriptions in compliance with the approved guidelines of the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
- Delivers medications to the medication carts on hospital units, verifies against administration records.
- Maintains strict confidentiality in handling health information and exhibits high level of ethical standards.
- Will be able to work independently and as an interdisciplinary team member.
- Will possess good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in both official languages (English and French) will be considered an asset
- Performs other assigned duties as required.
The successful candidate will possess:
- Completion of a post-secondary Pharmacy Technician Program from a recognized college or recognized equivalent.
- Registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists as a Registered Pharmacy Technician, required.
- Previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician in a hospital environment preferred.
- Working knowledge of computers and information technology, required.
- Proven ability to follow specific instructions with high degree of accuracy.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Demonstrated initiative and judgement (critical thinking) appropriate to the role.
- Demonstrated effective negotiation and conflict management/ resolution skills, required for working collaboratively with pharmacists, nurses, patients, prescribers and other stakeholders.
- Must possess knowledge and experience in performing pharmaceutical calculations, following hospital policies and procedures, using drug names -generic/trade, pharmaceutical abbreviations and other.
- Must have above average English language written and verbal communications skills.
- Must have above average keyboard typing skills, with emphasis on accuracy to meet the demands of pharmacy operations.
- Must be able to organize work to meet the daily demands of the workflows.
- Must have proven ability to perform the physical requirements of the position including moderate lifting, bending, pushing and pulling carts.
- Good understanding of change management; must be able to identify change needs and proactively act/ participate in addressing those needs.
- Previous experience in hospital Pharmacy procurement and pharmacy automation, preferred.
- Previous experience with Oracle Cerner, Pyxis automated dispensing cabinets, PacMed and Pacvision, Pak-Edge, MILT will be an asset.
- Proficiency in both official languages (English and French) will be considered an asset.
