We are currently seeking a motivated, analytical, and community-minded Lawyer to join our team. This unique role offers a diverse portfolio splitting focus between Criminal Law (Prosecution) and Civil Litigation.
Job Description
This position provides a rare and dynamic mix of public interest and private advocacy. You will balance a robust civil litigation practice with responsibilities as a per diem or contracted prosecutor, giving you exceptional, regular courtroom experience and a highly diverse file load.
Responsibilities
- Criminal Prosecution: Act on behalf of the Crown/regulatory bodies in the prosecution of provincial offences, municipal by-laws, or federal/provincial statutes; conduct bail hearings, trials, and sentencing hearings.
- Civil Litigation: Manage a diverse caseload from inception to resolution, including commercial disputes, employment law, and property/estate litigation.
- Advocacy & Court Appearances: Frequently appear before the Ontario Court of Justice, the Superior Court of Justice, and various administrative tribunals.
- File Management: Draft pleadings, motion materials, factums, motion records, and legal opinions. Conduct examinations for discovery and participate in mediations and pre-trial conferences.
- Client & Stakeholder Relations: Provide clear, strategic advice to corporate clients, individuals, and enforcement agencies. Maintain a high standard of client communication and professional empathy.
Qualifications
- Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from a recognized institution.
- Professional Standing: Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario (LSO).
- Experience: Ideally 3 to 5 years of post-call experience in civil litigation and/or criminal law (prosecution or defense). Strong candidates with slightly more or less experience are welcome to apply.
- Courtroom Confidence: Demonstrated trial or significant hearing experience is a strong asset.
- Exceptional legal research, drafting, and analytical skills.
