Estimator – Structural Steel & Miscellaneous Metals

A leading multi-trade infrastructure contractor in the Newmarket area is looking to add a detail-oriented Estimator to their team, specializing in Structural Steel and Miscellaneous Metals.
Reporting to the Division Manager, you will play a key role in securing new business by preparing accurate, competitive estimates and proposals for structural steel and miscellaneous metals projects. This role is responsible for reviewing drawings and specifications, calculating material and labour take-offs, communicating directly with clients, and collaborating closely with project managers to ensure a seamless transition from awarded tenders to project kickoff. The ability to estimate and close jobs independently is required.
Qualifications
- Degree or Diploma in Mechanical or Civil Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field
- 5+ years of experience as an Estimator in the Miscellaneous Metals or Structural Steel field
- Experience with connection details and weld symbols
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings
- Knowledge of miscellaneous and custom metals
- Ability to visit sites to measure and gather details as needed
- Exceptional time management, multitasking, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to collaborate closely with other project teams and stakeholders
- Ability to negotiate pricing and build strong working relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors
- Ability to close jobs independently is required
Responsibilities
- Assemble tender documents
- Research construction documents and analyze specifications
- Study documentation, meet with clients, and occasionally inspect construction sites to fully understand the scope of work
- Take off materials, consumables, equipment, and labour for construction projects
- Obtain subcontractor quotes for select projects and determine suitable packages
- Negotiate with service providers to secure better pricing
- Outline work plans to gauge time required for each development
- Perform risk assessments to account for potential deviations from the project plan
- Adjust profit margins to suit project, client, and economic climate conditions
- Draft proposals detailing envisaged materials, costs, and timeframes
- Meet with clients to discuss their thoughts and concerns regarding proposals
- Ensure all relevant documents and proposals are submitted before bid deadlines
- Report regularly to Management on tender status
- Stay current on the latest estimating technology and industry techniques
- Collaborate with other teams for assistance and advice on labour-related take-offs
Pay: $90,000.00-$110,000.00 per year
