Under the direction of the Supervisor, Culture, the Visitor Services and Collection Lead supports visitor services, site operations, curatorial activities and collections work across Cultural Services. This role helps create welcoming, accessible, and engaging experiences for diverse community members by coordinating bookable tours, greeting and assisting visitors and supporting inclusive public-facing operations at cultural sites throughout the Town. Responsibilities also include routine site oversight and contributing to and overseeing curatorial work such as collections documentation, organization, research and stewardship in alignment with the Town’s collection management policies. This position plays a key role in preserving cultural assets and ensuring they are shared responsibly and meaningfully with the community.
How you contribute to our organization:
- Supports basic collections care, including organizing, photographing, and cataloguing additions to the collection under the direction of the Supervisor, Culture.
- Maintains and updates the Past Perfect cultural software with data entry of catalogue records, digitized archival items, past donor files, digital photographs and key search terms.
- Research individual items in order to update existing records or create new ones.
- Supports front-of-house visitor services, including greeting guests, providing site information, coordinating tour bookings, and ensuring a positive visitor experience.
- Assists with routine site operations, including monitoring buildings and grounds, reporting maintenance needs, and supporting daily opening/closing procedures.
- Assists with ensuring the archival items within the collection are catalogued and digitalized as well as organize, photograph, and catalogue additions to the collection.
- To notify the Supervisor, Culture of problems and/or recommendations regarding the collection, collections management system and conservation material which may affect the ongoing operation of the Cultural Department
- Assists with supervision of volunteers for collection related tasks.
- Assists with the supervision of volunteers and summer staff related to collections management.
- Deals with complaints and problems of a minor nature with the public. Records and ensures that more complicated complaints and problems are forwarded to the appropriate person for resolution.
- Performs general clerical work. Researches material for special projects when required by the Supervisor, Culture.
- Responsible for assisting in the maintenance of a positive team-oriented work environment by working co-operatively with other employees, using the appropriate process for handling problems, helping to motivate and encourage peers, contributing ideas and assisting others where necessary.
What you bring to the team:
- College Certificate/Diploma in museum studies, history, or a related field
- Experience in working or volunteering in a museum or archives setting if preferred.
- Experience working with the Past Perfect collections management software is preferred.
- Previous experience or training in collections care or collections management.
- Knowledge of current museum practices and techniques of collections management including industry standard cataloguing and records management methods. Technical skills regarding program design, presentation, registration, and current school curricula are required.
- Experience in a computerized setting: working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
- Working knowledge of scanners, printers, DSLR cameras and photo software is an asset.
Salary: $29.91 - $35.19, plus 4% vacation pay and optional enrolment in OMERS pension plan
Hours: 6 hours per week – Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m
Location: Banting Homestead- 5116 Sir Frederick Banting Rd, Alliston ON. Occasional work at the Museum on the Boyne may be required.
Start Date: August 29, 2026
