The Opportunity
An established and growing automotive group is seeking a highly skilled, hands-on Dealership Controller for a confidential placement in the Durham Region.
This is a key leadership role reporting directly to senior management. You will oversee all financial operations, ensure accounting integrity, and provide strategic financial insights to drive profitability. This position is ideal for an experienced, detail-oriented accounting professional who thrives in the fast-paced environment of a dealership and is looking for a stable, long-term home.
What You’ll Do
As the Controller, you will manage the full-cycle accounting desk and oversee a small office team. Key responsibilities include:
- Financial Oversight & Reporting: Prepare accurate, timely monthly financial statements and manufacturer financial reports.
- Day-to-Day Accounting: Manage and execute full-cycle accounting functions, including Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR), and general ledger reconciliations.
- Deal Posting & Costing: Review and post vehicle sales deals, ensuring accurate costing, commission calculations, and inventory tracking.
- Payroll & Remittances: Manage the dealership’s unique payroll structure (salaries, flat-rate technicians, and commission-based sales staff), and ensure all source deductions, HST, and EHT remittances are completed accurately and on time.
- Internal Controls & Cash Flow: Monitor cash flow daily, manage bank reconciliations, and implement tight internal controls to safeguard dealership assets.
- Audit Prep: Coordinate year-end review engagements and tax filings with external accountants.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience: Minimum 2+ years of direct experience as a Dealership Controller (mandatory).
- CPA an asset but not mandatory.
- Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of dealership-specific accounting practices, including deal posting, vehicle inventory, and complex commission/flat-rate payroll structures.
- Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience with major Dealership Management Systems (DMS) such as Reynolds & Reynolds, CDK, or PBS is highly preferred.
- Education: A degree or diploma in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field (a CPA designation is an asset but not required with equivalent experience).
- Skills: Exceptionally organized, analytical, and possessing strong leadership skills with a "lead by example" work ethic.
