Description
Reporting to the Drafting Manager, the Piping Designer is an integral part of the ALCO drafting team.
The accuracy and quality of this role's piping models and isometric drawings directly drive fabrication efficiency, material accuracy, and project schedule. This position a critical link between engineering intent and constructible, fit-for-purpose deliverables.
Responsibilities
· Read and interpret P&ID’s.
· Review project piping design standards and specifications.
· Create accurate 3D layout and piping models in compliance with P&IDs and piping standards.
· Collaborate with project managers, engineers and other designers to optimize piping designs.
· Identify piping design issues and develop practical manufacturable solutions.
· Facilitate 3D model and constructability reviews.
· Check and approve vendor supplied drawings.
· Produce fabrication isometric drawings and bill of materials.
· Prepare piping plans and sections.
· Prepare plot plans and detail general arrangement drawings.
· Create pressure vessel models.
· Maintain organized project folder for design files, drawings and revisions.
· Perform final package walkdown for as-built and redline drawings.
· Assist piping checker as and when required.
· Mentor junior and intermediate designers.
· Create and maintain drawing standards.
· Make recommendations for improved process and efficiency.
· Other tasks as assigned.
Experience and Requirements
· 5+ years of experience in piping and layout design.
· Proficient in the use of CADworx 3D software and AutoCAD (2D and 3D).
· Strong knowledge in the use of Isogen for spool generation.
· Strong knowledge in oil and gas processes and layout.
· Previous experience working at a fabrication company is an advantage.
· Working knowledge of Navisworks software.
· Working knowledge of Bluebeam software is an advantage.
· Excellent communication skills.
· Ability to work individually or as part of a team.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
*Working location can be either our Edmonton or Calgary Office
· Primarily an office/drafting environment; role involves extended periods of sitting at a computer workstation using CAD software (CADworx, AutoCAD, Navisworks).
· Requires prolonged visual concentration on detailed 3D models, drawings, and dual/multi-monitor setups, along with repetitive use of a keyboard and mouse.
· Standard office hours, with occasional overtime required to meet project deadlines or milestone deliverables.
· May require periodic site visits or shop walkdowns to review fabrication progress, verify as-built conditions, or conduct constructability reviews; this may involve walking, standing, climbing stairs/ladders, and navigating an active fabrication shop.
· When on the shop floor or at a field site, must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots, and must follow all ALCO Safe Work Procedures.
· Occasional lifting of drawing sets, binders, or reference materials up to 20 lbs.
