We are recruiting a Thrift Store – Retail Manager to join our growing Non-Profit organization, driven by feminist values.
The Thrift Store Manager reports directly to the Executive Director and is responsible for the leadership, operations, and long-term sustainability of the Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society (KDEFS) Thrift Store as a social enterprise. This role balances revenue generation with social impact, ensuring the store operates as a safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed space for customers, donors, staff, volunteers, and community members—many of whom may be experiencing vulnerability. The Manager plays a key role in advancing KDEFS’s mandate by integrating dignity, respect, and equity into all store practices while maintaining and providing strong retail and business performance.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership
- Participate and contribute in Monthly Leadership Meetings, disseminate information back to team.
- Ensure compliance with KDEFS policies, BC Employment Standards, Work Safe BC regulations, and occupational health and safety requirements.
- Provides input into program budget and makes decisions on resource allocations.
- Apply equitable, transparent, and consistent HR practices in hiring, supervision, performance management, and discipline.
- Maintain appropriate documentation related to staffing, scheduling, incidents, and workplace concerns
- Create and coordinate scheduling for volunteers, staff and thrift store daily operations
- Uphold confidentiality, privacy, and professional boundaries at all times
- Contribute to a workplace culture that is respectful, inclusive, and free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation
Operations & Retail Management
- Oversee all day‑to‑day store operations to maintain a clean, welcoming, accessible, and safe retail environment
- Manage store hours, opening/closing routines, cash handling, and POS systems with accuracy and accountability
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and organizational policies, including accessibility and anti‑harassment standards
- Implement retail best practices to improve efficiency, customer experience, and revenue generation
- Maintain store equipment, coordinate repairs, and ensure operational readiness
Staff & Volunteer Supervision
- Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and support store staff and volunteers
- Foster a respectful, inclusive, feminist, and trauma‑informed workplace culture
- Provide ongoing coaching, performance feedback, and opportunities for skill development
- Model collaborative leadership, conflict‑aware communication, and values‑aligned decision‑making
- Support volunteer engagement strategies that honour diverse lived experiences and contributions
Inventory & Merchandising
- Oversee donation intake, sorting, pricing, and inventory rotation to ensure quality and consistency
- Develop creative merchandising strategies and visual displays that maximize sales and reflect the store’s mission
- Monitor stock levels, seasonal trends, and customer demand to optimize revenue
- Ensure ethical and transparent pricing practices aligned with community needs
- Maintain systems for waste reduction, recycling, and responsible disposal
Financial & Administrative Duties
- Manage store budget, sales targets, and expense controls to support financial sustainability
- Prepare sales reports, track KPIs, and contribute to financial planning and forecasting
- Coordinate banking, deposits, and basic bookkeeping processes as required
- Maintain accurate records, documentation, and compliance with organizational procedures
- Support grant reporting or impact measurement related to the store’s social enterprise outcomes
Community Engagement & Mission Alignment
- Represent KDEFS positively and professionally within the community
- Build and maintain relationships with donors, customers, community partners, and local businesses
- Promote the store as a community hub that reflects feminist values, equity, dignity, and respect
- Support outreach initiatives, donation drives, and events that strengthen community connection
- Ensure store practices align with KDEFS’s mission, including supporting individuals impacted by gender‑based violence and systemic inequities
Social Enterprise & Impact
- Contribute to the development and refinement of the store’s social enterprise strategy
- Track and communicate the store’s social impact, including community benefit and program support
- Identify opportunities for growth, innovation, and increased mission alignment
- Support the integration of lived‑experience voices into store operations and decision‑making
- Carry an after-hours emergency phone on a rotational basis
- Perform other duties as required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Requirements
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to provide compassionate, values‑aligned customer service
- Demonstrated leadership grounded in feminist, anti‑oppressive, and trauma‑informed principles
- Experience in retail management, nonprofit social enterprise, or community‑based work
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while also exercising independence, sound judgment, and self‑direction
- Skilled in organizing, planning, and managing time effectively in a fast‑paced environment
- Aptitude for streamlining processes, improving workflows, and solving complex administrative or operational challenges
- Comfortable handling cash, POS systems, and routine administrative tasks
- Proficient with Excel, Word, Outlook, and other digital tools, with the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and community‑centered service
- Sensitivity toward diverse cultural, religious, economic, and social backgrounds
- Physically able to perform retail duties, including standing for extended periods and lifting donated goods
- Ability to adapt with compassion and flexibility to shifting priorities and customer flow
- 3-5 years of experience in retail management, social enterprise, or non-profit operations.
- Diploma in human services an asset
- Experience working in a CARF or accredited organization.
Would be considered an asset to have the following training:
