Job Summary
Channel Industrial Group is seeking an Experienced Welder to join our production team in a custom steel fabrication environment. Reporting to the Welding Supervisor, the Welder is responsible for performing high-quality welding, tacking, grinding, and finishing work on custom steel parts and assemblies according to drawings, welding requirements, and shop procedures.
The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on welding experience in a fabrication shop, the ability to read drawings and weld symbols, and a strong commitment to safety, quality, and consistent workmanship.
Responsibilities
- Perform manual and semi-automatic welding on custom steel parts, components, and assemblies according to drawings, weld symbols, and quality requirements.
- Use welding processes such as GMAW, FCAW, and MCAW to complete production work safely and accurately.
- Complete tacking, welding, grinding, and finishing work as required to support fabrication and final assembly.
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and welding instructions in both metric and imperial units.
- Set up, adjust, and operate welding equipment based on material type, thickness, joint configuration, and welding requirements.
- Visually inspect completed welds for quality, consistency, appearance, and obvious defects before moving work to the next stage.
- Safely operate overhead cranes and use basic rigging practices to move, position, and stage materials and fabricated weldments.
- Communicate drawing, material, fit-up, welding, or quality concerns to the Welding Supervisor before proceeding.
- Accurately clock in and out of work orders to support time tracking, productivity, and shop procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while following OHSA and company safety procedures, including proper use of PPE.
- Work collaboratively with fitters, supervisors, and production team members to support quality and on-time delivery.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of welding experience in a custom steel fabrication, structural steel, platework, or heavy manufacturing environment.
- Valid CWB welding certification.
- Proficiency in GMAW, FCAW, and MCAW multi-pass welding processes.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and welding instructions.
- Strong understanding of weld quality, fit-up requirements, distortion control, and safe welding practices.
- Basic math and measuring skills for confirming dimensions, layout, and weld preparation.
- Experience operating overhead cranes and using basic rigging practices, or willingness to complete required training.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and commitment to producing quality welds.
- Ability to work safely in a fabrication shop environment and follow established procedures.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a production team.
Assets
- Experience with SMAW, SAW, or GTAW/TIG welding.
- Aluminum welding experience.
- Fitting experience in a custom steel fabrication environment.
- Forklift and overhead crane certification.
- Experience with JobBOSS² or other ERP/production time-tracking systems.
- Knowledge of steel grades, weld procedures, structural fabrication, and heavy fabrication practices.
- Red Seal or related trade certification is an asset.
