The Automation Technician will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing automated production systems to ensure maximum equipment uptime, process reliability, and compliance with ISO 13485 and GMP standards. - Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servo systems, and industrial control systems.
- Support and modify Siemens SIMATIC PCS 7 and Omron Sysmac automation platforms.
- Diagnose and repair sensors, actuators, instrumentation, temperature and pressure transmitters, and process control devices.
- Calibrate instrumentation including temperature, flow, level, pH, and conductivity systems.
- Maintain industrial communication networks including Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus, and Modbus.
- Support automated dipping lines, curing ovens, former chain systems, chemical dosing equipment, and nitrile processing systems.
- Maintain automated stripping, counting, stacking, packaging, conveyors, robotics, and case packing equipment.
- Troubleshoot vision inspection systems used for quality control and pinhole detection.
- Work closely with Maintenance, Engineering, and Production teams to minimize downtime and maximize equipment performance.
- Execute preventive and predictive maintenance programs for automation equipment and instrumentation.
- Analyze downtime trends and implement corrective actions to improve reliability.
- Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and equipment failure investigations.
- Recommend automation upgrades and process improvements to increase production efficiency and equipment uptime.
- Perform all work in accordance with Ontario Electrical Safety Code and plant safety policies.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 13485, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and regulated medical device manufacturing requirements.
- Participate in Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and support internal and external audits.
- Maintain accurate maintenance documentation, troubleshooting records, and equipment modifications.
- Collaborate with Engineering and Continuous Improvement teams to optimize manufacturing processes.
- Support new equipment installations, commissioning, and production line start-ups.
- Identify opportunities to improve automation reliability, temperature consistency, line speed, and product quality.
- Diploma or Certificate in Automation Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation, or 447A Instrumentation and Control Technician certification.
- Minimum 3 years of industrial automation experience in a continuous manufacturing environment.
Strong hands-on experience with:
- Siemens SIMATIC PCS 7
- Omron Sysmac
- PLCs
- HMIs
- VFDs
- Servo systems
- Industrial instrumentation
- Experience with process control systems including temperature, flow, pH, conductivity, and chemical dosing.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and P&IDs.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols including Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus, and Modbus.
- Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Strong troubleshooting, diagnostics, and root cause analysis skills.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills with the ability to collaborate across Maintenance, Engineering, Production, and Quality teams.
