Position Overview:
This is a recurring seasonal position that will provide direct support to Witset’s Food Security Coordinator, contributing to initiatives that promote food sovereignty, skill building and community engagement. Duties to vary by season but will include hands-on garden and greenhouse labor as well as assisting with small-scale infrastructure projects and overseeing community volunteers. This role blends gardening, maintenance, and community support, helping ensure our Food Security program is a productive, safe and accessible opportunity for everyone.
Key Responsibilities:
Garden & Food Production Support:
- Assist with planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and general garden upkeep
- Support greenhouse operations and seasonal crop production
- Help maintain soil health, composting systems, and garden organization
Maintenance & Construction Support:
- Perform basic repairs and maintenance across greenhouse and farm spaces; fences/small structures
- Build & repair garden boxes
- Assist with tool maintenance and organization of workspaces
- Support setup and takedown of seasonal infrastructure
Program Support & Community Engagement:
- Assist with community garden activities and workshops as needed
- Support volunteers, youth, and community members participating in program
- Help maintain clean, safe, and welcoming garden environments
- Contribute to daily operations and general upkeep of food security spaces
Other Duties:
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Food Security Coordinator, responding to operational needs of the program and supporting the overall well-being of the community.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Basic knowledge of gardening, farming, or food production
- Experience with basic tools and light construction (or willingness to learn)
- Valid BC Driver’s License and able to provide up to date Driver’s Abstract
- Ability to perform physical outdoor labour in varying weather conditions
- Be a reliable team member with a strong work ethic and the ability to work independently
- Positive attitude and eagerness to support community initiatives
- Must be committed to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector
- Basic First Aid & CPR would be an asset
Training and guidance will be provided by the Food Security Coordinator and further training opportunities may be available as the program develops and expands.
