Sharon Museum and Gardens (formerly the Sharon Temple National Historic Site & Museum) is an open-air museum dedicated to telling the story of the Children of Peace, the Sharon Temple, and the history of the community of East Gwillimbury. First established in 1918 as the Sharon Temple Museum, it is one of the oldest museums in Canada. The Museum is home to nine heritage buildings, including the Sharon Temple National Historic Site, as well as a diverse array of vegetable and flower gardens. The museum site is located in the heart of East Gwillimbury on 7 acres and is the cultural hub of the community, welcoming over 18,000 visitors each year. It is owned and operated by the Sharon Temple Museum Society (STMS).
Position Overview:
Sharon Museum and Gardens is seeking amotivated and enthusiastic Summer Camp Counsellor to join our team. Each summer, we offer six weeks of themed summer camps that strive to provide a positive, educational, and rewarding experience for all campers. This position is a full-time temporary contract, 35 hours per week, and the contract is for 4 weeks beginning as soon as possible.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in recreation and education and possess programming experience in a camp environment. The ideal candidate will be able to supervise children and maintain an energetic, welcoming, and positive attitude. They will be creative and organized, which will contribute to a successful summer of camp programming. They will also have excellent customer service.
Under the supervision of the Programming & Collections Manager and the Summer Camp Lead, the Summer Camp Counsellor will support the planning, implementation, and delivery of all summer camp activities and logistics.
Primary Job Functions:
- Assist with the preparation of camp programs for ages 6-12 around themes such as nature, history, geography, and physical activity.
- Implement daily camp programming, delivering structured activities such as games and crafts.
- Work collaboratively with two other camp staff members and assume responsibility for all campers in order to provide a welcoming and safe camp environment.
- Support the Camp Lead in maintaining an organized plan for children and staff to follow.
- Assist with the tracking of attendance, permission forms, and camper information.
- Maintain positive communication between campers, parents, managers, partnering groups, and staff throughout all weeks.
- Report to the Camp Lead as their direct supervisor.
General Duties:
- Provide interpretation to the public through tours, education, and outreach programs.
- Support event implementation and assist with program preparation.
- Assist staff with daily attendance tracking, gift shop inventory, and cash balancing.
- Provide support as needed for other staff members.
- Other tasks as required.
Qualifications:
- One year of previous camp or childcare experience.
- Currently enrolled or graduated from secondary or post-secondary studies in a related field, such as Education, Early Childhood Education, or Recreation or Leisure.
- Have an interest in the fields of Education, Recreation, or Leisure.
- Previous experience working with the public in a structured setting, in a paid and/or volunteer capacity.
- Ability to balance multiple priorities.
- Ability to handle difficult and confidential situations, possessing strong conflict resolution skills.
- Candidate must be between the ages of 15-30 and legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Must possess Standard First Aid and CPR training.
- Must possess or be willing to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Screening.
- Be prepared to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and evenings.
Physical Requirements:
Sharon Museum and Gardens is an open-air museum located north of Toronto on 7 acres of land. As this is a large site with multiple heritage buildings, the candidate will be required to move between these buildings and around the site as needed to conduct various activities. The ability to lift 30 pounds is required.
