About the Role
Fortress Ironworks is looking for a versatile, highly self-directed Hybrid Shop/Field Ironworker-Fabricator. This is a dynamic role for a skilled tradesman who enjoys the variety of jumping between precision shop fabrication and hands-on site erection/fabrication.
Depending on the project schedule, you will split your time between fabricating in our Langley shop and running independent installations in the field. When on site, you will be our lead point of execution—managing the field fabrication trailer, running the flat deck, interpreting field drawings, and ensuring structural and miscellaneous steel is erected safely and accurately.
Key Responsibilities
Field Erection & Site Management:
- Travel to various job sites to independently erect and install structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and architectural elements.
- Take full ownership of the field setup, managing the field fabrication trailer, flat deck, and all associated site tools and equipment.
- Read and interpret complex field drawings, site plans, and erection blueprints to execute installations without requiring direct supervision.
- Perform on-site modifications, field welding, and fitting as required by site conditions.
- Direct and manage site assistants, apprentices, or field helpers when assigned to your site.
- Coordinate with site superintendents and other trades to ensure smooth installation sequences.
Shop Fabrication:
- Transition seamlessly into the shop to assist with structural steel fabrication and welding during peak shop production times or between site installs.
- Weld, cut, fit, and prep materials according to shop drawings and CWB standards.
- Assist the shop foreman and fabrication team with daily production goals, operating shop machinery.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of combined experience in structural steel fabrication and field ironworking/erection.
- Certifications: Red Seal Journeyman Ironworker, Metal Fabricator, CWB certification is highly preferred.
- Welding Tickets: Valid CWB tickets (SMAW, FCAW) for all positions.
- Blueprint Reading: Strong ability to independently read and execute from both shop details and complex field erection drawings.
- Driving: Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean abstract (required for operating the flat deck and pulling the field trailer).
- Independence: Proven ability to work autonomously in the field, problem-solve on the fly, and manage your own site logistics.
