Job Summary
The Municipal District of St. Stephen is seeking a dedicated and safety-conscious Treatment Plant Operator to join our Public Works team. This is a full-time union position (CUPE Local 770) reporting to the Director of Infrastructure – Public Works.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the operation, monitoring, maintenance, and repair of the Municipality's wastewater collection and treatment system, including lift stations, pumping stations, sewer infrastructure, treatment facilities, and related equipment. This position plays a vital role in protecting public health, the environment, and ensuring compliance with provincial regulations.
The successful candidate must be available for scheduled overtime and emergency call-outs, as required.
Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor the wastewater treatment plant and collection system.
- Monitor gauges, meters, pumps, control panels, and treatment processes to ensure efficient system operation.
- Collect wastewater samples and perform routine laboratory testing.
- Maintain accurate operational logs, maintenance records, and regulatory documentation.
- Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on pumps, motors, valves, lift stations, treatment equipment, and related infrastructure.
- Inspect wastewater pumping stations, manholes, sewer systems, and treatment facilities.
- Assist with annual reporting and maintain records required by the Department of Environment and the Municipality.
- Coordinate and monitor maintenance contractors, as required.
- Perform confined space atmospheric testing before entry in accordance with safety procedures.
- Maintain wastewater buildings, structures, and grounds.
- Respond to after-hours call-outs and operational emergencies, as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent, together with related training programs or courses as required by the Municipal District of St. Stephen and/or the Province of New Brunswick.
- Class II Wastewater Treatment (WWT) Operator Certification, or Class I WWT Operator Certification with the demonstrated ability and commitment to obtain Class II certification as soon as reasonably practicable.
- Experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater collection and treatment systems and equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the Municipality.
- Valid Class 3F New Brunswick Driver's Licence.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of wastewater collection and treatment systems, pumps, motors, and associated mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, maps, plans, and specifications.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety practices, including confined space procedures.
- Strong troubleshooting, record-keeping, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound operational decisions.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, teamwork, and continuous learning.
- Good physical condition and the ability to perform the duties of the position.
