POSITION SUMMARY:
Designs and develops structural platforms, frame assemblies, and electrical conduit systems to support process piping and electrical infrastructure. The role focuses on general mechanical design, including layout development, component sizing, and integration of systems to ensure functionality, manufacturability, and compliance with project requirements.
Responsible for preparing and maintaining clear and accurate engineering documentation to support fabrication, shipping, and site reassembly. This includes detailed drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and assembly/installation instructions, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and ease of use for shop and field teams.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design & Development: Create detailed 3D models and drawings for structural platforms, frame assemblies, and electrical conduit systems using CAD software, ensuring designs are practical, manufacturable, and compliant with project requirements.
- Detailing & Drafting: Produce clear fabrication and assembly drawings, including weld details, tolerances, and material specifications suitable for shop execution.
- Documentation Preparation: Prepare and maintain complete engineering documentation packages to support fabrication, shipping, and site reassembly, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), general arrangement drawings, and assembly/installation instructions.
- Shipping & Reassembly Planning: Develop documentation that supports equipment disassembly for shipping and accurate, efficient reassembly at site, including labeling, match-marking, and assembly sequencing.
- Design Reviews: Participate in internal design reviews to identify potential issues and improve design quality, manufacturability, and compliance.
- Customer Specification Review: Review customer requirements and specifications to ensure designs meet project scope and expectations.
- Compliance & Standards: Ensure designs meet applicable codes, standards, and internal engineering practices.
- Technical Calculations: Perform required calculations for structural integrity and component sizing within designs.
- ERP System Use: Maintain engineering data, BOMs, and revisions within the ERP system to ensure accurate project tracking and documentation control.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with manufacturing, project management, and site teams to ensure designs and documentation meet fabrication and installation needs.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve design processes, documentation clarity, and workflow efficiency.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or three-year diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in an engineering role within a custom equipment manufacturing environment.
- Strong focus on engineering documentation preparation, with proven ability to produce clear, accurate, and complete fabrication, shipping, and site reassembly packages.
- High attention to detail to ensure quality and accuracy in designs and documentation.
- Ability to review and interpret customer specifications and technical requirements.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a practical, hands-on approach.
- Good organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills across engineering, manufacturing, and production teams.
- Quick learner with a strong willingness to learn new tools, technologies, and processes.
- CAD Proficiency: Strong hands-on experience with 3D CAD software SolidWorks or Inventor, Creo considered an asset). Experience with AutoCAD or equivalent 2D drafting tools.
- Familiarity with ERP systems for managing BOMs, revisions, and engineering data.
- Extensive experience in structural steel design and welding practices.
- Familiarity with applicable industry codes and standards (OSHA, CWB, AWS, CSA).
- Experience with piping systems and pressure vessel design is considered an asset.
- Exposure to Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is considered an asset.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Normal office environment with frequent sitting, standing, and walking around the floor.
- Required to use safety and personal protective equipment when on the production floor.
- Some travel required.
- Some overtime required.
