Description:
The Settlement Services Worker will work with Community Service Providers and individuals to support the settlement and integration of newcomers and immigrants in their lives in Chatham-Kent and/or Canada.
This position reports to the Settlement Services Co-ordinator.
Duties as a Settlement Worker:
· Meet with clients to conduct a needs assessment and determine their eligibility for specific programs and services offered at Adult Language and Learning;
· Provide the client with information and an orientation to services offered by Adult Language and Learning;
· Research and provide information about resources and services in the community and facilitate referrals to the appropriate services as needed;
· Facilitate access to community services by providing the client with the appropriate information, assisting with language interpretation or facilitating communication between the service provider and the client;
· Where the Settlement Worker is acting as a language facilitate, s/he will provide an impartial, non-biased and accurate interpretation between the client and the service provider
· Establish and maintain contact with newcomer families to determine their ongoing and changing needs and issues;
· Organize, plan and implement group sessions or activities on topics relating to settlement or topics that are pertinent to clients, prospective clients and cultural, ethnic or linguistic groups;
· Organize, plan, implement and/or participate in community, cultural, or ethnic events that will engage or reach newcomer and immigrant communities;
· Encourage and assist with the development of community partnerships and collaboration that assist and support immigrants and newcomers;
· Share program information with local businesses, clients, prospective clients, community organizations, government agencies, and community members;
· Assist in the development and implementation of promotional material and outreach strategies;
· Prepare and submit accurate and timely statistical, progress and activity reports to the Settlement Services Coordinator;
· Participate in Professional development opportunities, staff meetings and staff training as necessary;
· Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Ability to work individually as well as part of a team
· Excellent communication and writing skills in English is required;
· Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills;
· Ability to work effectively with clients of diverse backgrounds as well as with government agencies, employers and other staff members
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Zoom, Google and ability to learn new software applications as required
· Ability to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times
· Knowledge of Immigrant, Refugee and International Trained Professional issues is an asset;
· Post-secondary Degree or Diploma in a relevant field or equivalent training
· Previous experience working within the Settlement Sector (an asset)
·Fluency in an additional language (an asset)
-Fluency in Low German in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing (an asset)
· Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required;
· Criminal record check is required;
