Job Summary
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Child Support Worker to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with mothers and children and the ability to create a nurturing and educational environment. This role involves welcoming children to the shelter, assisting mother with problem solving and childcare decisions, provide age-appropriate programmed activities for the children, both individually and in a group setting, caring for children, facilitating their development, and ensuring their safety and well-being. The child support worker will work one-on-one with mothers, providing lay counselling, support, information and referrals and work with other staff to provide best resources and supports to mother and child/ren.
Responsibilities Client Related
- Welcome children to the shelter and provide them with age appropriate information regarding family violence
- Assist the mother with problem solving and childcare decisions
- Provide age-appropriate programmed activities for the children, both individually and in a group setting
- Ensure documentation of relevant incidents and observations are recorded for all children
- Make appropriate referrals to agencies in consultation with supervisor and mothers regarding their children
- Be aware of, and bring to supervisor’s attention, any concerns regarding children’s physical, emotional and cognitive development
- Assist in orientation of staff and volunteers as to the special needs of children exposed to family violence
- Provide parenting info/resources and model appropriate parenting skills
- Provide childcare for mothers attending medical or legal appointments
- Attend medical/professional appointments with mother in a support role, as required
- Participate in client case conferences, as required
- Work one-on-one with mothers, providing lay counselling, support, information, and referrals W
- Assist Outreach staff in creating and facilitating in-house groups about parenting topics
- Participate in, and assist in the creation of, presentations for schools and other agencies as they relate to the position
- Assist with supervision of activities within shelter facility
- Attend staff meetings and in-service programs as scheduled
- Assist clients and participate in housekeeping duties such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, and general facility upkeep
- Communicate need for groceries and facility supplies to shift supervisor and order when necessary
- Perform other related duties as required
Skills
- Early Childhood Diploma, Social Work Diploma, or combination of related education and experience
- Experience in childcare, crisis intervention; understanding of family violence issues and the effects on children
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Must present a professional image and model ethical values, attributes, and behaviors
- Must possess the ability to relate to clients in a non-judgmental manner and maintain confidentiality at all time
- Must provide a Criminal Record Check and Children’s Services Information CheckExperience working with children in a caregiving or educational setting is highly desirable.
