The Township of Springwater, located in the heart of Simcoe County, is a mixed urban/rural municipality with growing urban settlements and a prosperous agricultural sector. The municipality is currently recruiting for a two (2) existing permanent, full-time positions of Equipment Operator / Labourer.
Reporting directly to the Supervisor, Roads and/or the Roads Foreperson, the Equipment Operator / Labourer will operate necessary public works equipment for the needs of the Roads and Fleet Department.
The key responsibilities of the position are:
- Operate vehicles include pickups and heavy duty trucks between 1,000 and 30,000 kg Gross Vehicle Registered Weight (GVRW) equipped with construction, snow and ice maintenance attachments, pre-wet tanks or attachment controls.
- Operate front end farm tractor loaders, industrial tractors, four wheel drive articulating loaders or rubber tire backhoe loaders all with various attachments.
- Operate specialized heavy equipment as assigned including but not limited to grader, backhoe, excavator or loader as a primary assigned piece of equipment.
- Operate ride on compaction rollers for asphalt or gravel construction and maintenance.
- Operate pumps and devices required by the loading of water or salt brine materials for seasonal construction and maintenance.
- Carry out manual labour requiring articulate physical dexterity for construction and maintenance efforts of the department, including but not limited to sign works, pothole patching, shop duties, drainage repairs, string trimming, and traffic control.
- Maintains accurate maintenance and equipment records in accordance with governing codes.
- Ensures regular safety inspections of all applicable equipment.
- Maintain accurate timesheet material haul records in accordance with municipal policy and provincial legislation.
- Conduct vehicle inspection and maintain truck records as required by MTO audits and municipal policy.
- Conduct pre-use inspection forms on vehicles and equipment as required by municipal health and safety policies.
- Carries out such other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Completion of Secondary School Diploma.
- Minimum two (2) to five (5) years’ related experience and a demonstrated ability to successfully train in new duties.
- A valid Ontario Class D license with a satisfactory driving record; AZ preferred.
- A demonstrated ability to safely and effectively operate various types of equipment, including but not limited to graders, backhoes, loaders, excavators, tractors, mowers, power tools, light-duty and heavy-duty trucks between 1,000 and 30,000 kg.
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance and operation of heavy equipment, light duty and heavy-duty trucks.
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and safety procedures.
- Knowledge of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
- Good communication skills.
- Proficient with the use of computers including email, internet, work order and timekeeping software an asset. Previous experience with Citywide and/or UKG will be considered an asset.
- Ability to work hours beyond the normal work week, including evenings and weekends and ability to work on a rotational basis and be on-call.
- Completion of applicable Good Roads and AORS courses an asset.
- As a condition of employment, the successful candidate(s) must submit a Criminal Record Check satisfactory to the Township.
The Township of Springwater offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive employee benefit plan for this position, including participation in the OMERS pension plan for this position. Compensation for this position is $30.16 to $34.08 per hour (2026 rate) as per the Collective Agreement.
This position will work 40 hours per week; however, extended hours or additional hours on a call-in basis are required in inclement weather/road conditions. In addition, this position may be required to work early mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays or on a rotational basis and be on call in accordance with the Collective Agreement. Overtime is mandatory to address significant weather or infrastructure issues.
