Assistant Baker Overview: The Assistant Baker is an 8-week, full-time (35-hours per week) contract position based at the GROW Community Food Literacy Centre, reporting to the Program Manager. This role is designed to provide the youth participant with hands-on culinary skills while deepening their understanding of food literacy as a tool for social change. The candidate will assist in preparing dignified, nutritious meals for community members, many of whom face systemic barriers to food access, specifically vulnerable populations and single-parent households.
Hours: 35 hours per week, for 8-weeks
Pay Rate: $17.60 hourly

Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation and service of high-quality baked goods, adhering to strict food safety and nutritional guidelines.
- Support the delivery of food literacy programming aimed at empowering community members with culinary skills, baking techniques.
- Maintain a professional, sanitary, and welcoming kitchen /baking environment.
- Participate in food rescue and sorting operations to minimize waste and maximize community benefit.
- Engage with volunteers and community members to foster a supportive and inclusive kitchen atmosphere.
Preferred Skills:
- Interest in culinary arts, nutrition, or community food systems.
- Understanding of the social and cultural contexts of program users (including BIPOC and single-parent families).
- Experience in a commercial kitchen/bakery is an asset.
- Valid Safe Food Handler’s Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to work efficiently in a team environment.
- Physical ability to lift 40 lbs+.
