The Head Cook is responsible for preparing nutritious, child-friendly meals and snacks that meet dietary guidelines and health regulations. This role involves following menus, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, managing basic inventory, and ensuring proper food safety practices are always upheld.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare healthy, balanced meals and snacks for children ages 0–5.
- Follow established menus and recipes to meet nutritional standards.
- Provide input on menu development by offering suggestions based on children’s food preferences, seasonal ingredients, and practical kitchen experience to help improve future menus.
- Follow budgets by preparing meals efficiently, minimizing waste, and using ingredients responsibly to support cost-effective kitchen operations.
- Keep the kitchen clean, organized, and in compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Maintain proper food storage, labeling, and handling procedures.
- Monitor and restock kitchen supplies as needed while minimizing waste.
- Accommodate allergy or dietary restrictions as directed by centre staff.
- Preparing meals for special events or any additional food needs as they arise.
- Communicate with staff regarding menu changes, substitutions, or allergies.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a cook or in a similar food-preparation role.
- Understanding of nutrition and child-friendly meal preparation is an asset.
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and organization.
- Positive attitude and strong communication skills.
- Food Safe certification.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Clear Criminal Record Check.
