POSITION TITLE: Flusher Operator
DEPARTMENT: Planning & Engineering
SUPERVISOR: Public Works Foreman
TERMS: Full-time, Permanent
REFERENCE #: 2026-094
Purpose of Position:
The Flusher Operator is responsible for maintaining sewer and drainage infrastructure throughout the community through the safe operation of flusher/vacuum trucks and related equipment. This position requires good judgment, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety and safe work procedures
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs Sewer and Drainage Maintenance Operations (85%)
- Operates sewer flusher/vacuum trucks and related equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Performs sewer line flushing, cleaning, and maintenance to help prevent blockages and service interruptions.
- Cleans catch basins, manholes, culverts, and other drainage infrastructure.
- Assists with hydro excavation and utility locating activities as required.
- Conducts daily equipment inspections and performs routine preventative maintenance.
- Identifies and reports equipment problems, infrastructure deficiencies, and safety concerns.
- Completes daily logs, inspection records, safety documentation, and other required paperwork.
- Maintains work areas, vehicles, and equipment in a clean and organized condition.
- Follows departmental policies, procedures, and safe work practices always.
- Safety and Compliance (10%)
- Completes daily safety inspections, FLHAs, and other required safety documentation.
- Works safely around traffic, underground utilities, excavation sites, and confined spaces.
- Uses personal protective equipment and follows established safety procedures.
- Reports hazards, incidents, and near misses to supervisors.
- Supports emergency response activities related to sewer backups, flooding, or infrastructure failures as required.
- Responsible for the safe operation and care of assigned vehicles, equipment, tools, and materials.
- Helps reduce equipment downtime by reporting maintenance and repair needs promptly.
- Uses equipment, fuels, and supplies responsibly to support efficient operations.
- Other Related Duties as Required (5%)
- Assists other Public Works and Planning and Engineering crews as required.
- Participates in training and safety meetings.
- Provides support and guidance to new employees when requested.
Supervision or Training Duties:
- No direct supervisory responsibilities.
- May assist with the orientation and training of new employees.
- Provides guidance and support to coworkers on safe work practices and equipment operation when required.
Professional Certification, Education and Experience:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Valid BC Class 3 Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement; Class 1 is an asset
- 3-years experience operating sewer flusher/vacuum trucks or hydrovacs is preferred
- Experience with sewer, drainage, or public works maintenance is an asset
- Driver's abstract
Certifications (assets)
- Confined Space Entry
- Occupational First Aid
- Traffic Control
- WHMIS
Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of safe work practices around heavy equipment, traffic, and confined spaces
- Able to spot hazards and work safely in changing conditions
- Mechanical aptitude; able to perform basic equipment inspections and maintenance
- Able to work on your own and as part of a crew
- Good communication skills; professional with the public and coworkers
- Able to complete daily logs, inspection reports, and other basic paperwork
- Reliable, safety-focused, and willing to learn

HOURS OF WORK: Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.
PAY GRADE: $25.98 - $38.21 / hour depending on education & experience
