Communications Officer
Supervisor: Senior Manager, Policy and Professional Affairs
Position Summary
The Communications Officer contributes to and supports the execution and monitoring of consistent and effective bilingual communications strategies that promote, enhance and protect CPA’s brand reputation. Their primary role involves crafting and disseminating messages to various stakeholders, both internal and external. This position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and French, as well as strategic thinking and the ability to adapt to diverse communications channels.
Key Areas of Responsibility
· Writes content to support communication and marketing efforts to key stakeholders, such as website copy, social media and blog posts, speeches, newsletters, reports, presentations, brochures, and press releases.
· Ensures that new and consistent information is posted regularly to the website and social media channels.
· Updates website content, and audits architecture and/or navigation to enhance the user experience.
· Coordinates media interactions, including preparation of talking points, speeches and other supporting material, and cultivates press relationships to ensure coverage of CPA activities.
· Coordinates layout, translation and distribution of newsletters, reports and other materials.
· Contributes to and implements a communications strategy to achieve organizational goals.
· Monitors analytics, prepares reports and identifies ways to improve campaigns and strategies.
· Recommends ways to improve the perception of the organization by stakeholders and the public.
· Monitors media for mental health policy and practice coverage and flags potential challenges and emerging issues.
· Remains updated on industry trends to ensure all strategies and practices are current.
· Coordinates meetings, presentations and press conferences, including volunteers, vendors and staff to support these events.
· Maintains accurate distribution lists to support communication and marketing activities.
· Other duties as assigned.
Collaborates With
· Line reporting is directly to the Senior Manager, Policy and Professional Affairs.
· Project leads to ensure full integration of CPA objectives and messages across all units.
· Volunteers to assist with responses to emerging issues, to respond to media and public inquiries, and to support CPA leaders in their representational role.
· All staff in responding to translation needs and public inquiries.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Relevant university degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training.
- At least two years of experience in a communications or marketing role, preferably at a member-based association.
- Demonstrated experience in communications and marketing best practices to advance an organization's mission and goals.
- Demonstrated experience in planning, writing, editing and production of newsletters, press releases, annual reports, marketing literature, and other print and electronic publications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Excellent English language skills. Functional Bilingualism (English/French) is required.
· Excellent copywriting skills and the ability to write engaging, accurate content.
· Exceptional communication, interpersonal, organizational, time management and task management skills.
· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
· Proficiency with computer programs required for the field, including Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams), WordPress, Google Analytics, Adobe Creative Suite, social media management platforms and email marketing software.
· Knack for design and the ability to create engaging graphics.
· Familiarity with social media platforms and how they can be applied in the not-for-profit association sphere.
· Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times.
· Established relationships with Canadian health journalists would be an asset.
· Knowledge and experience working with non-profit associations and volunteers is an asset.
Working Conditions
- This is a full-time (37.5 hours) position from Monday to Friday, excluding a 30-minute daily unpaid lunch break.
- This position requires some travel within Canada, as well as the occasional requirement to work outside regular business hours, including while attending the annual conference.
- While this position is office-based (Ottawa), Staff are currently only required to work at least three days per week in the office.
