About You / What We Are Looking For
The City of Coquitlam is looking for a Senior Communications Coordinator to join our Corporate Services division. You'll join a spirited team of communications professionals dedicated to crafting strategic marketing and communications. This is more than a job—it's your chance to be a part of a team that shapes the narrative for our community and within our organization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide strategic communications and public engagement advice to senior leadership, managers and project teams on complex, sensitive and high-profile initiatives.
- Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of integrated communications and engagement strategies that support corporate priorities and City projects.
- Develop key messaging, communications materials and issues management strategies, and oversee media relations for major initiatives.
- Coordinate communications across departments to ensure consistent, timely and effective messaging.
- Review and approve communications materials to ensure they meet corporate standards, align with strategic objectives and reflect best practices.
- Supervise, mentor and support Communications Coordinators, providing guidance, feedback and quality assurance.
- Plan and oversee public engagement activities, working with project teams to build meaningful opportunities for community participation.

Minimum Qualifications
- Degree in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field supplemented by courses related to the work plus considerable related experience in a senior or lead communications role; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- IAP2 Certification or equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s License.
Applicants should have thorough knowledge of the principles, objectives, methods and techniques of communications work related to local government, and a desire to acquire knowledge of the City of Coquitlam’s operations and programs. The successful incumbent will thrive in a fast-paced environment and possess the ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and independence in the role. Superior English language skills, both written and oral, is required, as well as the ability to build and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships.
A minimum of five years of experience in communications, public relations, or directly related field is required, as well as a valid Driver’s License for the Province of BC.
Preferred Qualifications
Our ideal candidate will possess a post-secondary diploma or degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations or a directly-related field. Experience working within a municipality or another public sector setting would be considered an asset.
What We Offer:
This CUPE position has an hourly rate range of $49.76 - $58.81 (2025 rates). The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.

Additionally, there is an opportunity to participate in an earned day off/flex day program. This position is based in Coquitlam with some flexible, hybrid work options available.
