Glen Hill Strathaven, a charitable, not-for-profit long-term care home in Bowmanville, is seeking a Social Service Assistant to join our team through the Canada Summer Jobs Program.
This is more than just a summer job. During your placement, you'll have the opportunity to be part of an exciting chapter in our organization's history as we prepare for and transition into Glen Hill Gardens, our brand-new, state-of-the-art long-term care home. You'll gain valuable experience supporting residents and families through change while working alongside experienced professionals dedicated to enhancing the lives of seniors.
About the Role
Working under the guidance of the Social Service Coordinator, the Social Service Assistant will support residents and their families throughout their journey within the Home. This includes assisting with admissions, resident and family support, community connections, and transition planning.
The successful candidate will perform their duties in a manner consistent with our core values, ensuring resident safety, dignity, and exceptional customer service.
What You'll Do
- Assist with resident admissions and orientation to the Home
- Support residents, families, and Substitute Decision Makers during transitions
- Assist with discharge planning and coordination
- Help connect residents and families with community resources and support services
- Support resident transfers within the Home
- Assist in addressing resident and family concerns and facilitating referrals when required
- Contribute to initiatives related to the transition from Glen Hill Strathaven to Glen Hill Gardens
- Promote resident well-being, dignity, and quality of life through compassionate service
What We're Looking ForRequired Eligibility (Canada Summer Jobs Program)
Applicants must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person granted refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Social Service Worker, Social Work, Human Services, Gerontology, Psychology, Sociology, or related program
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Compassionate, professional, and resident-focused approach
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
- Experience working with seniors or vulnerable populations is considered an asset

Schedule
- 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday
- 8-week summer placement
- Placement end date no later than August 28, 2026
Conditions of Employment
The successful candidate will be required to provide:
- A current Police Vulnerable Sector Check
- Proof of a valid two-step Tuberculosis (TB) test or chest X-ray in accordance with legislative requirements
- Proof of compliance with Durham Christian Homes' COVID-19 Immunization Policy
