Position Summary
The Housekeeping Support Worker (HSW) is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for patients, visitors, and team members. This includes waste management, patient transport, and support services that contribute to infection control and overall hospital safety.
The HSW is knowledgeable about housekeeping procedures, equipment, materials, and hospital layout.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily cleaning tasks as outlined in housekeeping policies and procedures
- Manage waste according to current policies and safe handling procedures
- Transport patients and equipment throughout the hospital as required
- Replenish unit and cleaning supplies
- Maintain floors throughout the facility
- Participate in special projects, as assigned
- Disinfect patient care equipment as assigned Perform speciality cleaning in accordance with
housekeeping policies and procedures
- Communicate effectively with patients, team members and visitors
- Utilize provided communication devices appropriately
- Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Manager or supervisor of, Environmental
Services.
Specific Work Routines are itemized in the environmental services department and manuals.
Qualifications
Education
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent is required.
- Completion of Public Health Ontario’s (PHO) Core Competencies in Infection Control is preferred.
Experience
- A minimum of one (1) year Hospital Janitorial/Housekeeping experience is preferred.
Skills and Traits
- Must be able to meet the physical and emotional responsibilities of the role, including standing and walking for extended periods, frequent and repetitive pushing, pulling, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, as well as safely operating equipment.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, as outlined in the Physical Demands Analysis (PDA).
- Demonstrates proficiency in written and verbal communication, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Provides excellent customer service and contributes positively to teamwork and collaborative working relationships.
