Job Purpose
Translates to French core Law Society materials to increase understanding of the organization’s mandate, goals, initiatives, and services, and to foster greater communications possibilities between the organization, its members, and the public. Translates media materials, the Annual Report, corporate publications and web content, summaries, and electronic communications, and internal advice in accordance with by-laws and the French language Services Policy and upon request. Assists program areas with direct translation.
Key Accountabilities
Service Delivery Planning, Prioritization, and Escalation
- Assesses and prioritizes competing translation requests based on urgency, audience impact, and organizational priorities.
- Negotiates timelines and deliverables with clients to balance workload and ensure critical communications are prioritized.
- Monitors capacity and proactively communicates constraints, risks, and trade-offs.
- Escalates high-volume or urgent requests to the Director to secure additional support (e.g., outsourcing) or reprioritization.
Timely and Accurate Translation delivery
- Translates a broad range of corporate, legal, and public-facing materials (e.g., reports, forms, web content, business correspondence, media products).
- Produces translations that are accurate, clear, and aligned with intended meaning, audience, tone, and level of formality, which includes:
- Consulting with internal clients to clarify requirements, tone, phrasing, taking into account audience, context, and legal or reputational considerations.
- Identifying and resolving ambiguities or inconsistencies in source content to ensure accurate interpretation and mitigate risk of misinterpretation.
- Applying approved terminology, glossaries, and style standards to ensure consistency and linguistic integrity across all materials.
- Delivers completed translations within required timelines to support organizational communications and regulatory requirements.
Development and maintenance of translation resources
- Updates glossaries, terminology databases, and style guides.
- Tracks recurring terminology and standard phrasing for organizational use.
- Identifies and corrects linguistic inconsistencies across documents and platforms.
- Contributes to documentation of translation processes and standards.
Qualifications
- Requires a minimum of a 3-year Bachelor's Degree in Translation or Traduction or a related discipline.
- Requires a minimum of 3-4 years related experience providing translation services.
- Legal translation experience is strongly preferred.
Professional knowledge:
- Superior command of French grammar and legal references.
- Legal knowledge and Common law terminology in both English and French.
- Translation principles, issues, and developments.
- Understanding of principles underlying governance of the legal profession.
- Communication best practices, particularly in French language services.
Technical skills:
- Microsoft Office Suite / 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Translation memory software; Familiarity with LogiTerm is strongly preferred.
