Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.
The Manager of Emergency and Security Services is currently seeking multiple full-time Unit Operational Support Workers. The purpose of this dynamic position is to reduce confinement and enhance the quality of life for our patient population. This position serves as the crucial link between the patients, the clinical team, and the security/emergency services departments, with the primary goal of contributing to a more therapeutic and inclusive environment.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Assist with the coordination and facilitation of activities, and strategies to reduce patient confinement on the unit and on the program.

Escort patients outside the unit or building for walks, courtyard time, and other supervised activities to promote integration and reduce isolation.

Facilitate the logistics of on-unit activities such as: hairdressing, groups, courtyard, dining room.

Provide direction, oversight, training, and awareness related to security and emergency policies and procedures to staff and patients.
- Serve as the communication liaison between the program unit and the emergency and security services department.

Support and facilitate unit-wide or building-wide mock code exercises to ensure readiness and compliance.

Support all emergency code situations including planned interventions, as applicable.

Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and leave of absence processes to ensure readiness and compliance.
- Provide on-unit auditing of key cores, environmental integrity and other safety equipment.
- Provide relief coverage for the Forensic Security Office in extenuating circumstances
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Province of Ontario Security License/ Valid G Class Ontario Driver’s License - Required

Completion of Incident Management Systems 100 (Emergency Management Ontario) – Required

College Level Security or Law Enforcement Diploma - Required

Completion of the IAHSS Basic Training preferred and/or Mandatory completion after hire
-
2 years of recent Hospital Security Experience preferred

Additional specialized security training and certification in healthcare/mental health care setting preferred

Demonstrated knowledge of safety and security principles and practices interpersonal, analytical, customer service and organizational skills
-

In-depth understanding of security policies, procedures, emergency response protocols and standard operating procedures in a psychiatric hospital setting.

Familiarity with emergency code responses and the ability to facilitate mock code exercises.

Knowledge of provincial and regional regulations and legislative requirements related to security training in healthcare facilities.

Awareness of campus, regional and high secure provincial forensic protocols and specialized security measures.

Familiarity with electronic record keeping systems, OHSA standards and the IRS internal responsibility system.

Comprehensive knowledge of relevant safety and security protocols and standards.

Demonstrated skills in crisis intervention, de-escalation, and conflict resolution.

Demonstrate a strong understanding of relational security concepts, and how to translate that information into appropriate responses.
