Seeking an active and adventurous individual who is comfortable with technology to support a 38-year-old Deaf employer. Despite a stroke that left him paralyzed, he has regained some physical movement and uses technology for wheelchair mobility, communication, and playing video games. He enjoys activities like swimming, kayaking, and road trips with his partner!
Although it is preferred, having basic American Sign Language skills is not mandatory. Don't worry if you are unfamiliar with ASL, as we are more than willing to assist you in learning!
The ideal candidate must possess fluent written English skills, as they are crucial for effective communication. Additionally, the candidate should demonstrate an aptitude and ability to learn and use American Sign Language, as well as the E-Tran board (spelling board). Furthermore, the candidate must be comfortable with technology and demonstrate an aptitude for assistive technology setups.
Location:
- Vancouver (Near Arbutus Village Park)
Shifts & Hours of Work:
- Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday
- 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
- Must be willing to work out of town with the client on weekends once or twice a month
- Must have a flexible schedule, as shifts may change from week to week
Compensation:
Responsibilities will include (but may not be limited to):
- Provide assistance with personal care tasks including showering, personal hygiene, grooming, and dressing
- Perform tube feeding as needed
- Safely transferring the client using a ceiling lift
- Conduct range of motion exercises as instructed
- Support the client during social events and outdoor activities
Required Qualifications:
- Must have 1 year of caregiving experience or working with individuals with disabilities
- Must be fully vaccinated
- Must be comfortable with technology, and be able to demonstrate aptitude for assistive technology set ups
- Basic American Sign Language skills considered a strong asset, but willingness to learn is required if not already familiar with ASL
- Someone who is creative, active, and has a strong willingness to learn
- Physical fitness is essential as the client is highly active
- Fluent in English, particularly in written communication, as the client primarily communicates by spelling
- Possession of a Class 5 driver's license is required
