Position Summary
The BAS Designate supports the daily operation of the Before and Afterschool Program and assumes supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Supervisor. During regular program operation, the Designate functions as an Educator within the classroom while also providing operational support, mentorship, and oversight to the BAS team.
The Designate helps ensure the program operates safely, efficiently, and in accordance with licensing requirements, organizational policies, and program expectations. This role requires strong communication, leadership, organization, and the ability to support staff while maintaining positive relationships with children, families, and school personnel.
Hours of Work
- Morning Care: 7:00am – 9:00am
- Aftercare: 2:30pm – 6:30pm
The BAS Designate is responsible for supervisory coverage during times when the Supervisor is not present in the building.
*Additional hours at Manor Park Child Care Centre- located 900m from the school- make this a full time position.
- · Lunch Coverage: 12pm-2pm
Key Responsibilities
Morning Care Responsibilities
- Complete and document daily yard safety checks for both Kindergarten and School-Age outdoor play areas.
- Monitor staff sign in/out procedures to ensure accurate documentation of hours worked.
- Communicate any attendance or documentation discrepancies to the BAS Supervisor.
- Collect and review daily program plans from educators to ensure planned programming is completed and balanced throughout the week.
- Ensure planned activities include a variety of experiences such as:
- Gross motor
- Art
- Science
- Sensory
- Dramatic play
- Games with rules
- Child-led planned activities
- Check in with educators to ensure programming is being implemented and provide support or suggestions when needed.
- Send absence inquiry emails to families for children absent from morning care without prior notification.
- Supervise transitions and hand-offs to the school.
- Support staff in completing required documentation and program planning.
- Review daily logs to ensure documentation is complete and all children are properly signed in and out.
- Transfer morning care medications to the appropriate aftercare medication bags.
- Review previous day aftercare attendance records for accuracy and completeness.
- Communicate any concerns, questions, incidents, or operational issues to the BAS Supervisor through email documentation.
- Act as an approachable support person for staff and assist with communicating concerns or questions to the Supervisor when needed.
Aftercare Responsibilities
- Assist with bus arrival supervision and child pick-up when the Supervisor is unavailable or occupied.
- Complete afternoon absence calls when required.
- Provide support to all BAS program rooms in the absence of the Supervisor.
- Support late stay staff and provide additional assistance as needed.
- Conduct end-of-day room checks to ensure classrooms are clean, organized, and prepared for the following day.
- Document and communicate any concerns, incidents, maintenance issues, or operational matters to the BAS Supervisor.
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintain compliance with Ministry licensing regulations, organizational policies, and health and safety procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff.
- Foster a positive, professional, and collaborative team environment.
- Support children in a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
- Step into a leadership role and make informed decisions when the Supervisor is absent.
Qualifications
- Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators (preferred).
- Experience working in licensed childcare and/or before and afterschool programs.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and problem solve effectively.
- Ability to speak, write and read fluently in English.
- Bilingualism considered an asset.
- Knowledge of Ministry licensing requirements and child care best practices.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification.
- Valid Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Up to date immunizations, including Covid 19 primary doses
