Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Dispatcher to join our Cutting Edge team, based out of our Calgary office. The successful candidate will coordinate the daily movement of Class 1 tractor-trailer drivers on short-haul work orders transporting bulk materials – most of which involve multiple pick-ups and deliveries to the same client over the course of a day – ensuring loads are assigned safely, legally, and efficiently.
As a federally regulated carrier, we require a dispatcher who understands driver Hours of Service, commercial vehicle weight and dimension limits, and the local road network – including the in-city and local roads that heavy vehicles are restricted from or unable to travel. This role is central to keeping our fleet compliant, our drivers moving, and our customers served.
Once training is complete, the schedule for this position will transition to include weekend coverage as part of the regular rotation.
Key Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Dispatch Class 1 drivers for short-haul work orders, prioritizing daily requests and planning next-day assignments.
- Plan loads within vehicle capacity and legal weight and dimension limits.
- Route drivers using knowledge of truck routes, clearance limits, and roads affected by provincial, and municipal road bans during spring and summer months.
- Reassign drivers or equipment when assets are out of service to keep work orders on schedule.
- Coordinate tractor and trailer maintenance and repairs with the internal team, tracking serviceability and downtime.
- Set up new clients, sites, and work orders in the dispatch system.
- Assign drivers in compliance with federal Hours of Service, monitoring availability to prevent violations.
- Support National Safety Code and ELD compliance through Samsara, escalating issues to operations and safety.
- Track and communicate road bans, weight restrictions, closures, and hazards affecting routes.
- Action client and driver requests by phone, text, or email while maintaining strong relationships.
- Update clients on service, delays, access issues, and new work orders.
- Confirm and reconcile scale and work order tickets for accuracy.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in logistics, transportation, business administration, or related a field is an asset.
- Minimum 2 years of previous dispatch experience, preferably supporting Class 1 tractor-trailer operations.
- Experience with a federally regulated carrier and working knowledge of federal Hours of Service regulations is a strong asset.
- Experience with dispatch software, route management systems, and ERP systems (Samsara or Navusoft experience is an asset).
- Familiarity with Calgary and area truck routes, road restrictions, low clearances, and roads that heavy or oversized vehicles must avoid.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with drivers, customers, and management.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and dispatch management systems.
- Ability to maintain positive customer and driver experiences under pressure.
- Adaptability to last-minute changes and emergency situations.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and capacity to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
