First Alert offers competitive compensation negotiated based on experience and qualifications. We prefer 2-5 years of prior locating experience, however we will train the right candidate utilizing on the job training, hands on experience and mentorship support. All of our locate candidates, regardless of experience, will be continually trained and internally assessed.
Position requires candidate to coordinate with Dispatch and safely performing a variety of technical activities. There is a high level of independence and self drive in this type of work including verbal/written communication, interpersonal, organizational, problem solving skills. Traits such as being safety conscious, having situational awareness, attention to detail, ability to stay calm in stressful situations, ability to work alone and in teams and having spatial awareness are beneficial.
Position overview:
- Underground facility locators identify, locate and mark underground infrastructure to prevent damage during ground disturbance activities. This may also be required during planning to and design to protect new and existing infrastructure.
Key Duties will include, but not limited to:
- Interpret, troubleshoot and obtain information necessary (such as site plans, maps, and blueprints) to identify underground facilities
- Locate and mark underground utilities using appropriate locating methods and equipment.
- Communicate findings to excavation personnel or other appropriate authorities
- Operate and troubleshoot sensitive locating equipment; perform extensive walking in varied terrain and conditions (deep snow, muddy areas, etc. )
- Follow relevant federal, provincial and municipal regulations and industry best standards and best practices. Follow company specific safety protocols and complete required training
- Provide accurate documentation and/or sketches using an electronic drawing tool for the specific requested work areas and clients.
- Safely operate company vehicle; maintain professional conduct and appearance
- Travel and work extended/out‑of‑town shifts as required (accommodations provided)
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Private Locate Techs: Standard First Aid, H2S, CSO, Ground Disturbance II (in‑class preferred), ATV/UTV Rider, PCST, Wildlife/Bear Awareness are required. Advanced locating course is an asset. Drone certification, and Canadian Certified Locator certification are considered high valued credentials.
- Public (one call response) Locate Techs: Standard First Aid, CSO, Ground Disturbance II (in class and USP endorsed preferred) are required. Alternate Locator Program registration with Utility Safety Partners (for the Locator) is considered high valued credential.
- Will be required to drive a Company vehicle and therefore will require a valid Driver’s License (Class 5 or higher) and have an acceptable driving record. Must pass a Pre-Employ drug and alcohol testing.
- Must be self-motivated, able to prioritize, meet deadlines and be highly organized. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong professionalism and work ethic
- Computer Proficiency in Microsoft office applications, mapping programs and drawing software.
- Strong navigation skills and ability to locate proper addresses and LSDs.
- Physically capable- requires frequent walking and bending, working outside in elements and carrying tools and supplies of at least 50 lbs+
