We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Side Hoe Operator to join our Underground Utilities team in the Edmonton area. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating a side boom/side hoe excavator to support the installation of underground water, sewer, storm, and utility infrastructure while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate side hoe excavators and other heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Assist with the installation of underground utilities including water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and related infrastructure.
- Perform trenching, backfilling, grading, and pipe placement activities.
- Work closely with pipe layers, labourers, foremen, and survey crews to ensure accurate installation.
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip equipment inspections and complete required documentation.
- Identify and report equipment deficiencies, maintenance requirements, and safety concerns.
- Follow project plans, grades, specifications, and utility locates.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Adhere to all company policies, safety procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Participate in toolbox meetings, hazard assessments, and safety initiatives.
- Assist with other duties as assigned to support project requirements.
Qualifications
- Previous experience operating a side hoe excavator in underground utility construction.
- Strong understanding of underground utility installation practices and excavation procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, grades, and utility locates.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License; Class 3 with air brakes is considered an asset.
- Ground Disturbance Level II certification considered an asset.
- CSTS, WHMIS, and other industry safety certifications are considered assets.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work extended hours as required by project schedules.
- Ability to climb on and off heavy equipment safely.
- Comfortable working in varying weather and site conditions.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks when required.
Work Location
Projects are located throughout the Edmonton region. Driving to various job sites is required.
