Victoria Contracting & Municipal Maintenance Corporation (VCMMC) is seeking an experienced and motivated Parks & Gardens Crew Leader to join our growing team. This leadership position is responsible for overseeing daily maintenance operations, coordinating crews, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality municipal parks and landscape services within the greater Victoria area.
Under the direction of the Parks Crew Supervisor, the successful candidate will be a hands-on lead who can effectively manage a crew of at least 3–5 employees while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, customer service, and efficient completion of work orders. This position combines leadership, horticultural knowledge, equipment operation, and administrative responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, supervise, and mentor a crew of 3–5 Parks & Gardens Maintenance Workers.
- Organize, assign, and monitor daily work activities to ensure projects and maintenance schedules are completed efficiently and on time.
- Complete and oversee work orders, crew schedules, timesheets, material tracking, and other required documentation.
- Conduct and document pre-job safety meetings, site hazard assessments, and equipment inspections.
- Ensure compliance with all company safety policies, procedures, and municipal standards.
- Maintain parks, boulevards, trails, and landscaped areas through mowing, edging, pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, planting, and general grounds maintenance.
- Maintain annual and perennial flower beds, shrub beds, and trees.
- Assist with irrigation system inspections, basic repairs, and troubleshooting.
- Operate and oversee the safe use of landscaping and maintenance equipment, including leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, self-propelled mowers, and other powered equipment.
- Operate or direct the operation of specialized equipment; experience operating skid steers/bobcats is considered an asset.
- Coordinate and complete multiple jobs and work orders while meeting operational deadlines.
- Maintain a professional appearance and interact with municipal representatives, residents, and the public in a courteous and respectful manner.
- Participate in physical labour and maintenance activities alongside crew members as required.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience leading or supervising a crewin landscape maintenance, parks operations, horticulture, or a related field.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
- Demonstrated ability to safely operate a variety of landscaping and maintenance equipment.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively lead and motivate staff.
- Strong attention to detail with respect to paperwork, work orders, timesheets, and material tracking.
- Ability to follow direction, make sound decisions, and solve problems in a fast-paced environment.
- Training in horticulture, agronomy, botany, landscape maintenance, or a related discipline is considered an asset.
- Basic understanding of irrigation systems and a willingness to continue horticultural education is desirable.
- Additional certifications, licenses, equipment operation experience, first aid training, or related qualifications are considered assets.
Working Conditions
This position is physically demanding and requires working outdoors in all weather conditions. The successful candidate must be capable of lifting and carrying heavy materials, performing repetitive physical tasks, and standing, walking, bending, and kneeling for extended periods.
