Sointula Co-op Association invites applications for the position of General Manager (GM).
Located in the community of Sointula on Malcolm Island, the Sointula Co-op was established in 1909 and is the oldest Co-operative in Western Canada. We operate three locations: a full-service grocery store with meat, deli, and liquor departments; a gas bar and convenience store with bulk fuel sales; and a hardware store, generating approximately $4 million in annual sales

What you’ll do: Reporting to the Board of Directors, the GM will be responsible for the day-to-day performance and oversight of the organization, including the supervision and training of team members. Using effective interpersonal communication and a strategic mindset, the successful candidate will demonstrate business insight and excellent analytical skills that align with and strengthen Sointula Co-op’s direction, goals and operational plans. The GM will work with the Board to develop the strategic plan, and establish the strategy, goals, and objectives for the organization in alignment with its mission, vision, and values. Additionally, the successful candidate will manage the development and implementation of programs and policies designed to generate sustainable value and profitability for the organization. The primary responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operations – Oversee the overall day-to-day administration, co-ordination, and control of all three Co-op locations, ensuring success with a hands-on approach. Ensure that department heads and other team members are minimizing waste and maximizing profit margins and sales opportunities. Multitask to solve immediate problems while still devoting attention to paperwork and longer-term plans. Set the tone for calmness, professionalism and kindness.
- Customer Service - Strive for stellar customer service. Contribute to the development of products, services, and programs to enhance the overall customer experience while improving membership growth and profit.
- Financial Stewardship – Lead development of the Co-op’s operating and capital budgets. Understand the Co-op’s various expense and revenue streams and how to find relevant information in the financial statements, point of sale, and accounting systems. Drive and manage the growth of sales and performance to improve profitability and overall customer experience including overseeing store pricing, promotions, and products.
- Leadership - Provide strong leadership and a positive work environment that promotes the engagement and development of team members through regular staff meetings, performance reviews, and training programs. Offer insight to the development and implementation of programs and policies.
- Technology – Demonstrate an aptitude for POS systems including management of the hardware, software, and data analytics.
- Relationships – Utilize excellent communication skills to build and enhance relationships with Co-op members, customers, staff, and the Board of Directors.
- Strategy - Work closely with the Board to interpret the vision, goals, mission, and mandate and develop and implement the Co-operative’s strategy.
The Team: You will work closely with the Board of Directors and lead a diverse team of staff of approximately 15 team members across 3 locations. This includes an Assistant Manager and Department Heads at the Gas Bar and Hardware store. This team strives to cultivate a culture of community, creativity, and integrity. You will also liaise with our parent organization, Federated Co-operatives Ltd., on a wide range of operational issues.

Located off the northeast side of Vancouver Island, Sointula is a ferry ride away from the communities of Alert Bay and Port McNeill. Sointula has an active Recreation Association, a Lion’s Club, and a Resource Centre, all of which offer vital support to community members. The area hosts significant annual events including the May long ball tournament, Salmon Days, and Winterfest.

Why it matters: The Sointula Co-op is the only source for groceries, gas, and hardware on Malcolm Island and its continued success is critical to the community. Our remote location, dependence on a ferry, and aging infrastructure pose unique challenges.
Who you are: You are looking for a career in Retail Store Operations and have:
- 5-7 years of retail supervisory or managerial experience. Experience in the grocery industry and/or previous Co-op experience is an asset, as is prior non-management work experience (i.e., as a clerk) at the retail level.
- A business or similar degree or have combination of relevant education and experience.
- Experience with or a strong understanding of basic accounting principles, retail metrics such as margins, and how to read and interpret financial statements.
- Computer experience including word processing, spreadsheets, and point of sale systems.
- Strong business skills and an ability to plan and manage resources,
- A demonstrated ability to ensure accountability, manage conflict, and balance stakeholder needs.
- Leadership skills, motivation, the ability to learn quickly while requiring minimal supervision.
- A willingness to learn and take direction from the Board of Directors.
- A demonstrated ability in developing creative, and innovative marketing strategies that identify and promote opportunities for retail growth.
- A reputation for being honest, collaborative, trustworthy, results oriented and strive to be the best in what you do.
- An understanding of the importance of building relationships and cooperation/collaboration to achieve desired outcomes.
- The ability to maintain your composure and a cheerful attitude even at the craziest of times.
What we offer:
- An approximate salary range of $83,240 - $109.890
