At Artemis Huron, previously Huron Women’s Shelter, we use a gender-based analysis (GBA+), trauma and violence informed framework to deliver prevention, education, crisis support and healing programs to women and their families who have been impacted by gender-based violence (GBV) in rural Huron County. Our services include a 24-hour helpline and emergency shelter, risk assessment and safety planning, advocacy, system navigation, individual and group healing opportunities, and community development.
We are seeking a Women and Children’s Advocate (Summer Staff) to join our Residential Services team.
Job Purpose
Reporting to the Residential Supervisor and working closely with the Direct Service team, the Women and Children’s Advocate (Summer Staff) supports women and children who have been impacted by gender-based violence (GBV) and are accessing our programs and services.
The Women and Children’s Advocate (Summer Staff) supports our Emergency Shelter and Second Stage Program, supporting the day-to-day functions of the programs, and through children’s programming and support.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
1. Assists with front-line support to women and families in the Emergency Shelter and Second Stage Program, building therapeutic relationships using GBA+ and trauma- and violence-informed approaches while assisting with intake, risk assessments, safety planning, documentation, and communication with staff. Supports daily shelter operations and client needs by welcoming clients and visitors, sharing community resources, assisting with practical tasks, maintaining spaces, and helping facilitate group programming and activities.
2. Provides on-site childcare to support caregiver participation in meetings and programming, while ensuring a safe and engaging environment for children. Plans and leads recreational activities and assists with group programming through the Child Advocacy Program for children and caregivers.

Location
The Women and Children’s Advocate (Summer Staff) works within our Emergency Shelter and Second Stage buildings. The position may also require working in non-standard workplaces when supporting women and their families in the community.
Hours
The Women and Children’s Advocate (Summer Staff) works a standard workweek of 35 hours/week for an 8-week contract. Required to work variable evening and weekend hours as required to accommodate program needs.

· Demonstrates an understanding of feminism, GBA+, and trauma and violence informed analysis
· Demonstrates a strong woman and child centred approach, prioritizing client’s safety, choice and empowerment
· Ability to stay calm in crisis situations
· Ability to build therapeutic relationships with women and children
· Strong problem-solving skills
· Strong knowledge of community services and programs
· Attention to detail
· Strong ability to communicate and collaborate
· Ability to work independently as well as within a team with minimal supervision
· Proficiency in use of computer office technology and applications
Fluency in other languages an asset
Qualifications
· Completed or currently enrolled in post-secondary education in Social Work, Women’s Studies, Social Service Worker or Child and Youth Worker, or related education and experience.
· Employment or volunteer experience in the social services or the women’s sector is considered an asset.
· Valid driver’s license; access to a reliable vehicle and proof of adequate ($2 million) insurance. Clean driver’s abstract.
· Clear current Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).
· Valid CPR Level C, First Aid (ASIST, CPI an asset).
· This position is partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program; therefore, the incumbent must be:
· Between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
· A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
· Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
