What to Expect
In this role you’ll support the design, construction, launch, and transfer of geartrain manufacturing lines and equipment used in Optimus Actuators. This role will prioritize successful design and launch of production line while maintaining maximum efficiency, production volume, and safety while validating performance and fully documenting all aspects of the project for handover to sustaining operations.
The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise in high-volume geartrain manufacturing lines and the successful introduction of new technologies to mass production line. They must demonstrate experience translating manufacturing requirements into efficient, detailed production line designs that are robust and practical to implement . In this position, you will take ownership of production line creation of specialized equipment from concept through line launch completion—defining performance requirements, running process flow simulations as needed to validate solutions grounded in first principles, and leading commissioning through final validation. Travel expected 25%.
What You'll Do-
Use CAD software and simulation tools (e.g., AutoCAD, FactoryCAD, or similar) to create 2D/3D models, floor plans, and detailed drawings that support both main production line and also supporting areas within Geartrain Manufacturing Scope
-
Work with factory simulation/modeling teams to develop flow manufacturing constraints for new equipment development such as aisle sizing, incoming raw materials to the cell and work in progress areas between cells
-
Install, commission, integrate and troubleshoot new equipment and tooling and support setup for manufacturing, including machines, peripheral equipment, tools, and automation systems
-
Oversee the handover of commissioned lines to production teams, including operator training, documentation of procedures and manufacturing BOM, and resolution of issues during line launch
-
Contribute to R&D efforts in equipment design and process development by integrating layout considerations, material flow, and facility requirements early in the innovation cycle to enable scalable and efficient manufacturing solutions
-
Design and develop detailed cell and production line layouts for each gearbox, including placement of machinery and their integration to the mainline, workstations, material flow paths, utilities, and storage areas to optimize production processes and efficiency
-
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Factory, Infrastructure, Material Flow, Design, Manufacturing Eng., EHS personnel, and project&program leads) to integrate layouts into main factory design
-
Ensure compliance with Tesla safety regulations, ergonomic standards, and lean manufacturing principles while evaluating new equipment and processes from R&D initiatives
-
Evaluate data on production performance, material handling, and space utilization to recommend layout improvements that align with ongoing R&D advancements in equipment and manufacturing processes
-
Design custom fixtures, tooling, and other structures that would be used in manufacturing cells as needed, providing detailed build to print models/drawings for fabrication
What You'll Bring-
Degree in Industrial Engineering or a related field (advanced degree or relevant certifications are a plus), or industry experience and evidence of exceptional ability
-
3–7+ years of experience in manufacturing or industrial engineering, with hands-on involvement in factory/plant layout projects
-
Proficiency in layout design software, process simulation tools, and data analysis
-
Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, material flow, ergonomics, and facility safety standards
-
Experience designing layouts, mechanical equipment, fixturing, and tooling
-
Knowledge in high speed gantry design including the pick and place into conveyor systems
-
Knowledge in material flow analysis and basic knowledge about different industrial robots in high speed material transfer and pick and place applications
-
Experience with SolidWorks CAD and PDM software. Familiarity with other CAD software (i.e CATIA, Siemens NX) also applies
-
Experience with automation equipment, CNC equipment, heat treatment, assembly and end of line testing equipment
-
Strong understanding of drafting standards and the application of GD&T (e.g., ASME Y14.5)
